Pryor and this 135 avoidance story....

He was indeed avoided and to find out, just get the old boxing mags from the 1979-end of 1981 era and they speak about it often. I know this forum does not hold Pryor highly, but talk to the old boxing guys and theu indeed do. He was a killer compared to the guys ranked w/ him at that time at lightweight.

 

That is not true. My brother lived in Cincy at the time and Pryor would have fought Godzilla in his cave for a shot at the title. Espana wanted nothing to do with Pryor. Read the old mags, you can get them on ebay. it is all right there.

 

R U SERIOUS. DO YOU REALLY EXPECT TO TAKEN SERIOUSLY. You know he didn't avoid Bumphus. Bumphus was nothing. AARON had just finished the fight w/ Alexis and needed a rest. He wanted a superfight. Mancini or coimebacking Leonard, etc. He then got hooked on drugs by his wife Teresa and the rest is history. You may not like the guy, but his record stands by itself. Go tell Leonard or Hearns or Steward that Pryor was terrible. They would ridicule you. It is foolish.

Pryor came to the PAL club here in Indy in '79 to train for a couple of days. I was a teenager and have no idea why he came, maybe Buddy LaRosa brought him along on a business trip as there used to be a LaRosa's downtown near the gym. Nobody would spar with him. And there were plenty of pros there that day (Norman Goins and Marion Thomas to name a couple). He was feared even then.
