True, he is overrated on ATG status, but not as a H2H fighter. His chin WAS pretty much full out concrete, I don't know where you got a different impression. Perhaps it was when he took Arguello's straight right full on the chin and resumed attacking directly after? As far as defense, he was quite underrated. His style was so unorthodox and his movements so herky-jerky that he was hard to hit clean, but of course he'd get hit every so often with a punch while off balance, which is what led to his flash KD's, such as his KD against Akio Kamea, which he rolled out of, backflipped right up and attacked Kameda before the ref even had a chance to call the KD. His accuracy is also terribly underrated due to his wild style. There was a lot of method behind his madness. Watch his fight ending flurry on Arguello in their first fight, nearly every punch lands flush. And Cermano? You mean Cervantes? De La Hoya never showed the ability to fight at 15 rounds, whereas Pryor showed the ability to go all out for 15 full rounds. Yes, DLH didn't show stamina problems until later, but he never went the full 15 even in his prime.
Exactly:good Oscar may not be everybodies cup of tea but he is a quality fighter and is very underated on forums. Plus some of the fighters of yesteryear become overated as time goes by.
active fighters are usually pretty underrated in these types of threads. The fact that Oscar is not ahead in the poll is not surprising to me.
I like Oscar to win this. Better chin, plenty of skill, a size advantage, and a jab that can control the fight until Pryor gets overaggressive and leaves himself open for the hooks. Chalk me up for an Oscar UD or possible stoppage.
For his talent and ability, and for the praise he usually gets, yes. His resume is relatively weak by comparison and he gets overrated quite a bit, especially by younger fans whose knowledge is limited to Legendary Nights.
He might've been tired when he took a couple of rounds off late against Gonzalez, but he had a strong 12th round. Maybe he was just playing it safe for those couple rounds because of his eye. I think that was the first time in a pro fight in which his face really got banged up.
Pryor had the better chin, I don't understand the dispute here. Oscar's jab was not active enough to control a fight with a whirl-wind like Pryor, and while Pryor was used to fighting Oscar's style, the same can not be said of Oscar facing Pryor's style. But it can be said that another smaller fighter with an even lesser workrate than Pryor gave Oscar fits with his brawling style and blistering combinations. Mosley anyone? And that is a tamer style than the one Pryor used.
Mosley was a better fighter than Pryor. I also had Oscar winning the rematch with Shane comfortably- so if he almost swept a bigger, better version of Pryor, why can't he beat Pryor himself? Shane was only like an inch shorter than Oscar. There's a good 4 inch difference between Hoya and Pryor, and Oscar would be the heavier man on fight night, too. But hey...maybe The Hawk can get some more of that "vitamin water" to help his cause.:thumbsup
