He did but when you lose such a fight it takes many things away from you, like Meldrick Taylor against Julio Cesar chavez. That wasnt the same Taylor in the second fight.
Arguello as is his custom, was coming on strong down the stretch of the fight.....in fact by the end of the 13th, it looked like Arguello had Pryor right in the situation he wanted him......Arguello coming on, and Pryor fighting fatigued......... Then after drinking from the bottle with the special mix, Pryor comes out storming like its the first round and Arguello gets battered. ........There is no question knowing what we know now from Luis Resto's testimony of Panama Lewis antics, that Arguello would have beaten Pryor, and likely much earlier than the late rounds......the HBO cameras actually caught Panama giving Pryor water from that same bottle in the early rounds. The little knows fact about this black bottle situation is that Panama was feeding Pryor from that bottle at various points in the fight when Pryor looked winded. There is no question that Pryor was aided in his breathing from the crushed asthma pills. The question only becomes whether Panama also loaded Pryors gloves as he did with Luis Resto.........some of you all dont know that the Arguello-Pryor fight was fought just weeks before Panama removed the padding from Luis Resto's gloves and loaded his wraps. Its been proven what Panama was giving Pryor in that bottle with the special mix. Anyone with common sense can figure it out pretty quickly....... The only question is whether Panama altered Pryor's gloves and loaded his wraps as he did with Luis Resto's, and I say the chances of that having happened in the Arguello fight is pretty high. No question in my mind that in Panama, its as if you're dealing with the Devil himself. The man has no conscious.:-(
Yeah Panama is an ass. But if all these controversies are around Pryor and Lewis, why do people rate Pryor so highly then? Is it because there is no proof?
It a little like Pacquiao refusing legit testing now..... .....people somehow convince themselves that without the actual lab evidence, no one should have the right to accuse or even question something that simple logic and common sense says occured. For years before Luis Resto's testimony of what Panama illegally did with his fighters to gain an advantage, I had been posting in this forum, particulary in the Classic section on how tarnished Pryors victory over Arguello was. ......when Luis Resto offered his testimony in that documentary "Assault in the ring.".......I thought, "Thankyou sweet Jesus for the truth is finally out." ......finally the mystery of Panama Lewis pleading in Aaron Pryor's corner for someone in his team to hand him the bottle that he mixed, had been solved. .....and yet, a great portion of those ****ing morons in the Classic section are unwilling to take Luis Resto's word for it........stating Resto is an ex-convict (convicted because of Panama btw:roll...and because of it, Resto has no credibility.atsch ......and yet, all you need to do is put the puzzle together, gather the facts, and anyone with a brain will come to the conclusion that Panama Lewis and Aaron Pryor both were freakin cheats.:fire The documentary, "Assault in the Ring" should be enough for anyone with a brain to be convinced Pryor cheated by gulping down of concoction of water and crushed asthma pills in his fight with Alexis Arguello." ....but if you want just a little bit more evidence, somebody maybe quoting Aaron Pryor of admitting his cheating ways?????......here's an article that quotes Emmanuel Steward in a conversation he had with Aaron Pryor right before the Arguello-Pryor rematch. .......Pryor outright admits he had cheated in the first Arguello fight..... .....read down the page, Steward mentions Pryor admitted to him that he was worried that because with Panama, he was getting away with things not on the up and up...... http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=20737&more=1 People are so stupid nowdays in this computer age, that they thing anything void of scientific lab evidence is not having any proof. Logic and common sense can go a long way to discovering the truth people. For years, people took Panama's and Pryor's word for it that the mix in thier bottle contained water and peppermint shnapps for Pryor's upset stomach......at least that was their story. Actual testimony from a Panama Lewis fighter caught cheating along with Panama is brought out, giving light to what was in the bottle that night in the Arguello-Pryor fight, and people just refuse to soak in reality without there being lab evidence.atsch:-(
Do you know where I can watch the documentary? You have some very good points man, but it is sometimes hard to convince people who are die hard fans. I admit that I like Pryors style, but I dont rate him as high as some people do because of the incident. Same with Pacquiao, even though there is no proof and Mayweather is an ass for asking for blood testing, I do think that if he was clean he wouldnt have any problem with it at all.
That was one of those points that always stuck with me as well. They talk about it in the HBO Legendary Nights Pryor/Arguello. In a few of Pryor's fights before Arguello - he was knocked down by much lesser punchers than Arguello. Arguello hit Pryor with punches that have put many men to sleep but Pryor kept on coming. However - in the rematch - Pryor overwhelmed Arguello with ease.
Dont you think that in the rematch Arguello wasnt the same? Like when Chavez beated Meldrick taylor, Taylor wasnt the same fighter in the rematch.
Admittedly, I was a huge Arguello fan when I watched him lose to Pryor. I was a 15 year old boxing fan watching an idol of mine get torn apart by Pryor in that 14th round. I was just a kid, I thought Arguello to be close to invincible having watched him for a few fights in the early 80's on CBS........ I was crushed that night Arguello was stopped. Went the whole night that evening not being able to blink an eye of sleep. When the news came out that HBO had video of Panama asking in the corner for something other than water. A mix that after Pryor had drunk from it I was hyped and convinced there would be payback for the rematch. .....but like I said, I was 15, and Arguello having suffered a brutal beating just months earlier never entered my mind. I remember a little reality that was said to me from an uncle when I mentioned to him that in a few days, Arguello was going to get revenge on Aaron Pryor. I remember just the look on his face which exhibited, "you're just a kid. You have no idea." Then he said, "I dont know. A fighter does'nt recover from a beating like that so soon." ......and so my introduction into the nuances of the game not seen by the regular casual fan. As much as I would like it not to be there. Even as a grown man of 42 years of age now. There is still a scar in my heart left from that Arguello defeat. Everytime either Arguello's or Pryor's name comes up, the first thing to my mind is Pryor is a cheat. Pryor cheated Arguello. When I first saw the documentary, "Assault in the ring"....as Resto described how Panama would crush the asthma pills into the water bottle, I felt a sense of relief. A sense of freedom. That scar in my heart from being an Arguello fan, was still there, but now I felt proud to wear it. Relieved that my intuition was correct, Pryor was a cheat. I'm not an emotional type of person, I seldom ever tear up. But watching that documentary I realized that Arguello who had died just a few months before the documentary from an alleged suicide before "Assault in the Ring" came out, never found out the truth about the bottle....... ......and a tear ran down my cheek. Still feeling that scar in my heart!
Yeah I know exactly how you feel, its like me never being able to enjoy football again after seing Zidane being sent off in the WC final, that still hunts me to this day, that Materazzi sucker should be killed
Pryor didn't need the black bottle in the rematch knocked him out even faster. Pryor was just too good for Arguello.
pryor was coked out of his mind with the special mix in the bottle.panama lewis denied it was coke and said he mixed peppermint shnapps with water to settle his upset stomach.he should have been DQ'd for the booze because lewis admitted it was booze in there.which we all know it was coke
Those were mostly balance shots though. Pryor was aggressive and got sloppy and dropped in fights against Kameda, Cervantes, and Johnson, but not seriously hurt (the Johnson KD was more serious than the others IIRC). Pryor ate a monster right hand in the 13th against Arguello and took it well, he was actually hurt more by Arguello earlier in the fight by a left hook. My guess is he saw the right coming, but not the left hook.
Alexis is my all time favorite. He is the very definition of the term "all time great," and arguably the very best stand-up boxer/puncher in history. However, I think that the facts that Arguello was 2 divisions north of his best weight, and fighting his 83rd pro fight, presented much bigger problems than the infamous black bottle. Today it is a largely forgotten fact that Alexis could have fought WBC champ Saoul Mamby, and easily become the first man in history to claim a world title in 4 divisions, but Alexis refused to play that way
honorable rather than belt grab he tried to get univeral recognition back then you had to be recognized to be champ many guys go the easy route for belts now avoid numero uno
