Because of this fight, believe it or not. And also because of the pointing and glaring before the opening bell, and the mean looking mustache. A lot of posters here have serious man-love for any fighter who looks mean. Pryor is probably the most overrated POS in boxing history.
Alexis Argullo had a record of 18-3 in world title fights. That record spanned 4 divisions and 9 years. He did not build it fighting a bunch of 2nd rate mandatories. Alexis sought out, and fought the best. We're talking about guys like Olivares, Escalera, Kobayashi, Limon, Chacon, Castillo, Boza-Edwards, Watt, Gannigan, Mancinni, Pryor, et. On a pound for pound, career verses career, basis, Aaron Pryor is just barely qualified to mow El Flaco's lawn.
Nobody questioned Alexis arguellos record, everybody knows he fought the best. We are questioning Pryors record, which I think is extremely overrated.
And I'm not disagreeing. Pryor's big claim to fame is cheating in a fight against a ring worn Arguello. A lot of people, especially younger fans, simply do not realize how much Alexis accomplished before the Pryor fight. That was AA's 83rd ****ing fight, and his 4th division, and yet, I've had posters try to claim Pryor beat a "prime" Arguello, and argue with me for days over it.
Yes thats why I think he is extremely overrated and should by no means be rated as an ATG, I really loved his style of fighting but his record does not impress me at all.
Panama lewis is the one who put the asthma tablets in the water. I'm not certain if pryor knew, but it definantly helped him out. He may have won the fight w/out it, but he certainly got a boost from it & came out alot more energetic than he finished the previous round.
I agree with most of the discussion here about Pryor. There's no question something fishy was happening in the corner, and we have proof that Lewis is willing to do whatever necessary to win. Nothing would surprise me. But the Pacquiao stuff on this thread is stupid. There is real evidence, caught on camera, against Pryor what do folks have on Pac other than "he hits too hard"? Refusing the blood sample pissed me off but also isn't uncommon in a negotiations struggle. People draw arbitrary lines in the sand all the time. They were both wrong.
Yeah they were definately both wrong, no question about that. You cant just take one side. But like I said before, Mayweather was an ass for asking for random blood test, while Pacquiao if was clean should have agreed on a 14 day window and shutted him up, unless using all those stupid excuses. Thats why people suspect he is on something, and because he made such a huge jump in weight and became a bigger hitter than Shane Mosley.
What a fight. The second greatest of all time for my money, and the best of the 80s...and that is surely saying something. Regarding the controversy, I really don't know what to think...but even in light of the Resto documentary, I still don't have any problem re-watching it, time and time again.
There is no doubt that this is one of the greatest fights of all times. But still the controversy makes it sad.
It's sad regardless for me, seeing a warrior and gentleman like Alexis Arguello go out like that after giving it his best effort. I hope Pryor didn't cheat...but it's hard to believe all things considered.
