I just got off a one hour phone conversation/arguement with a fellow die hard on a fantasy Pryor vs Mayweather match-up, with him trying to convince me the Hawk would win. atsch Who yall got? For me Pryor won't be able to find little Floyd. Pryor also would leave himself too wide open for the always accurate Mayweather. Pryor comes straight forward throwing 100 punches a round but what does it mean when your hitting shoulders and elbows? I see Floyd as marksmen snipping away at Pryor's grill. Pryor fights with emotion and aggressiveness that style gets beat by pure boxing 365 days. My mate still can't tell me how he finds Floyd? He's not fast and he's not awkward. Floyd could sit in the nosebleed seats and see Pryor's punches coming lol Sweet Pea or Ray Leonard is a different story though.
Aaron Pryor beats Floyd up at 140lbs. Pryor throws in clusters, and has deceptively fast hands, so I don't care how good Floyd's defensive maneuvering is, he'd get hit. He wouldn't even respect Floyd's power, so expect to see him push the pace, and he showed a great jab in his fight with Arguello so he has different dimensions to his game which would enable to him to mix the pace throughout the fight. Very competitive, but I've seen Floyd troubled by pressure before, and Pryor has the athletic ability to accompany his strength. Floyd would land single shots, whilst Pryor is throwing 5 and 6...landing with maybe 1 or 2. Pryor can go like that for 15 rounds. Pryor UD12 Mayweather.
Don't care how good Mayweather's defence is? C'mon Addie you're better then that. lol Floyd's effective counter punching would destroy Aarons wide looping power punches. Also Aaron would try his best to turn it into a street fight but I see Floyd being way too disciplined to get into it. We're talking one of the best boxing IQ's ever, who never gets flustered. Just no way the Hawk would win a decision, his best bet would be a KO, but he doesn't find Floyd with enough of his heavy stuff to stop Floyd. Pryor had a decent jab, but not authoritive or rangy enough to be effective. Pryor gets disected and countered like crazy, you gotta try and outbox floyd to beat him and you're wrong Pryor didn't have the variety he was one dimensional, got hit waay too much.
Alexis was there for Pryor to hit, remember he was trying to knock him out too. Guys end up looking better than they are in some fights and thats one example. Pryor looked like Holmes with that jab and he was landing like 60% of his combos. Against a fighter like Floyd his volume gets cut in half and his accuracy gets it worst plus he gets eaten up on the inside (people forget how strong Floyd is) I just think that Arguello fight makes it seem more competitive than it really would be to some people. Like i said the best bet for beating Floyd is a "boxer" someone who makes few mistakes (or good at not getting caught when he does), can change the direction of the fight with one punch most importantly high degree of slickness and technique. Btw I think Winky and Vernon would've both beaten Floyd and i woulda loved to have seen Cory vs Floyd as well, that fight always intrigued me.
It's a valid point, Counter. When your opponent has the handspeed that Pryor possesses, shots are going to get through, especially when their coming in volumes. Marquez landed flush a few times, and Pryor will be throwing at twice the rate, with far more natural speed than Marquez who was very sluggish. Pryor would bully floyd, no power to worry about, and a pretty substantial skill set of his own. My views have not changed.
^ By "you should know better" what i meant was that comment seemed so nescient, something that my girlfriend would say and not what i would expect from an astute boxing fan like yourself. Its like saying, don't care how hard Julian Jackson hits, when up against a opponent/style no matter how good but who's just made to order for him. Btw Winona is definitely easy on the eye, I hear she's a little freak too. you seem to be obsessed like captain hook with peter pan though. lol
In my defense, it was very late when I responded and my heart wasn't in the discussion. Admittedly I let myself down, but the point is valid. Floyd Mayweather can only do so much to avoid being hit, like most fighters, he rolls with punches, blocks his chin by raising his shoulder, and moves his head. It's very effective, but Pryor throws from all angles, and he has handspeed to make it very difficult for anyone, not just Floyd, to anticipate. Shots will get through, just as Castillo and Marquez landed, but that ontop of Pryor's work rate will probably see him win rounds regardless of whether he lands or not. That's going to be a big issue in this fight. Mayweather either will need to match Pryor's workrate, which is nigh impossible, or he has to counter often and sharp enough to make Pryor go into a little bit of a shell. He shrugged Arguello's bombs off like they were nothing, so I don't envision Pryor being reluctant in closing the distance at all. The more I think about it, I feel the decision will be hotly debated, whoever comes out on top.
Floyds defence neutralises Pryors offence. He'll pot shot the whole fight. Pryor was very open and Floyds got the height, reach and speed on him.
Considering Pryor is certainly mobile enough to close the distance, and possesses the sort of handspeed which could make Floyd uncomfortable, how does Floyd's defense neutralize anything? Pryor would laugh at Floyd's potshots, and would probably only make him even more determined to get inside and flurry as he often would.
Pryor isnt beating Mayweather for me .. Floyd will see the Pryor attack coming and pick him off for a UD .. What made Pryor the great fighter he was, was his relentlessness but there was nothing subtle or cute about it, it was aggressive, attacking and very crowd pleasing .. The only 2 guys in the last 30 odd years that would/could beat Floyd at 140 would be Pernell or Duran .. I cant envisage, Tzsyu or Chavez doing anything with Floyd .. Who do you guys think has the better shot at Floyd ? Duran, Pernell or both of em ??
Duran, Whitaker, and Pryor all beat Floyd at 140lbs in my judgment. The problem we have Axl is that if Castillo I never happened, you'd be saying the same thing about him. People say you need a jab to beat Floyd well Castillo didn't need one, he just need to close the distance, and put the pressure on. That worked that night, and Pryor can certainly do that as effectively as most.
I dont think Pryor had the ability to get inside against Floyd. Mayweather is a master at keeping fights at his range especially against guys like Pryor who dont have significant height and reach .. Mayweather is a great mover, and would put on a defensive, rear guard action masterclass for me .... Duran and Pernell had far more subtleties to their boxing. To beat Floyd you have to make him think about whats going on and get him out of his comfort zone, you need a full skill-set for that and i dont think Pryor had it against this calibre of fighter .... Dont get me wrong though, im a huge Pryor fan but i think Mayweather is all wrong for him ..
