Pryor got paid a grand total of $50,000 a year few months earlier to fight for the title. Then he gets offered $500k to face Leonard, and he wants more $$. He talks about it after he beat Lennox Blackmoore. Pryor turns down $750k for a Duran fight because he had managerial issues, with his manager going to jail....HBO shows their documentary and people continue this myth of Pryor being ducked by guys that weren't even in the same division as him. Of course Leonard was gonna get most of the $$$, he was a greedy diva and the draw. Look at how much other guys who weren't names were getting paid to face him. Hell, Duran was a big name and champ for 6 years and Leonard made like 5-6 times as much as him the first time around. HBO's Legendary Myths....they should never show that **** again until they get their facts checked, or else you get stupid stuff like "Arguello was winning on the cards against Pryor", "everyone was scared or Pryor". Pryor had his shots at Leonard, and Duran...hell even a unification at 140 with Mamby, and turned them all down.
What does this have to do with HBO altering the truth to make a better story, when altering the truth is not necessary?
It's common knowledge that Pryor admitted this after the Blackmoore fight. Common knowledge to those who don't fall victim to "HBO's Legendary Myths"
Aaron pryor was a leonard sparring partner. Ray new exactly what to expect from pryor and he wanted no part of it. That's common knowledge
No it isn't. It is clear that those who have studied the history, or have seen something this oh-so-obscure such as Pryor's win over Blackmoore, which is all over youtube, know that Pryor turned down the fight with Leonard for more $$. Anyone who reads the excellent SI Article titled "The Champion of Confusion" also knows this, as well as the legal and personal problems that also caused him to reject a Duran fight. That is also discussed in the recent biography on Duran by Christian Guidance. But HBO can't afford to do simple fact-checking. They'd rather bend the truth to make a better story, instead of just letting the story and truth play out. As if you need more drama for Pryor-Arguello 1, one of the best fights ever, in also one of the best boxing years ever in 1982. As a result, boxing forums get polluted with myths due to HBO's lack of due dilligence.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4k9qiCJjhCw People would not fight Pryor period. Kind of like Rigo. Nobody will fight pryor they are scared shizitlezz
Nobody except those no-names like Leonard and Duran who offered Pryor career high paydays. Or Mamby, the other 140 lb. champ. HBO with their lack of ability to do simple fact-checking. Notice how Pryor's market value went up from 1981-82, after all those fights on network TV? Key problem with boxing today. Lack of it on network TV. Now it's on Showtime and HBO, the station that creates myths such as 'everyone feared Pryor" whe
If what you are saying is true in this age of litigation somebody would file a liable law suit. The fact is its the truth. People are still alive that heard Dundee say no way he puts his guy in with pryor. I heard it and its a fact. There is no defence against facts. Your a fanboy and sugar is a atg but he was scared shizitless of pryor
Fanboy because I correct HBO's revisionist history? I always make fun of Leonard, particularly with Johnny Gill jokes. Shows one's desperation for an "argument" when they resort to "fanboy" arguments. Then again, it's an easy assumption to make on boxing forums. Since they are filled with people who blindly idolize fighters who don't know they exist. Lawsuit???? LOL. This info is not even hard to find. All you need to do is watch an interview, a Duran autobiography, and read a SI Article to learn about this stuff. THREE sources that are easy to find. Doesn't take an insider to know this. Then again, I'm talking to someone that didn't even know Pryor turned down a Leonard fight until an hour ago!!
I was there I lived it. You are not discussing with a 20 year old. Dundee and Ray did not want that fight with pryor. you rewrite history on your own time Im done with it.
