I suspect now that Wlad retired we will get some Wilder fanboys crying that AJ is taking a soft touch defense. Actually Pulev is a concencus top 6-7 hw and is an unusually good defense right after such a huge fight as Wlad. Let's line up the resumes of Pulev and Wilder Pulev 5 best wins 1. Chisora 2. Tony Thompson 3a. Ustinov 3b. Dimitrenko. 5. Shot Peter Wilders 5 best wins 1.Stivrne 2aDuhaupas 2b.Washington 2c. Scott 5. Spilzka. I'd say they are about equal on quality of opponent for top 5 wins, although Wilders wins were more done more impressively. Any way you slice it, while I think Wilder has a somewhat better chance of beating AJ, Pulev is a top notch defense. Either way, Wilder has given AJ no reason to put Wilder ahead of Pulev in the quie to face AJ, neither in resume or in marketing potential. Hopefully Wilder fights Ortiz and that changes, but I'll believe it when I see it.
Wilder 1 top ten heavyweight in Stiverne. Pulev 2 top ten heavyweights in Thompson and Dimetrenko. Also Chisora and Ustinov who were just outside top ten. Pulev has the better resume, hands down.
They need only be reminded that it's a mandatory defense, which Wilder has STILL YET to make after holding the WBC belt for 2.5+ years. That said, Pulev is not a good defense. Old WK easily dispatched him in 2014, and since then he's had 5 unimpressive fights against opponents that could not even be close to top 10. In my eyes, he hasn't earned this second shot. I think that's mostly due to Sauerland's lack of support for Pulev, they've never really invested much in him as far as getting top opposition and good tune ups. Pulev will show up, wave his arms around again and stand right in front AJ and get KO'd even faster than WK KO'd him. It's a garbage fight, but not AJ's fault.....just as it wasn't WK's fault.
There really isn't any difference.... Pulev also stepped in with the #1 HW in the world at the time, something Wilder has yet to do. Chisora, Ustinov, Dimitrenko and old Thompson vs. Scott, Stiverne, Molina, Duhaupas, shot Arreola, Szpilka and Washington... Wilder has a slight advantage in quantity(which is what you'd expect considering he holds a major world title) Pulev who has been pretty inactive for the last couple of years has a resume that's comparable to the WBC title holder. That's pretty damn sad.
I'd take Pulev's resume but they're close to being level. Pulev would be Wilders' best opponent faced. However, I think Wilder probably tears his head off.
On another note... Why/how is Pulev the IBF's guy if his last two fights he won then defended the "WBA Inter-Continental title??" Has he been the IBF's mandatory since he lost to Wladimir nearly 3 years ago? Still, while fighting for regional WBA titles? Seems super odd.
That's a stretch and then some... actually just not correct. Sam Peter, Kevin Johnson, and Mo Harris are all nearly 40 years old and each didn't have a remotely relevant to any degree win in many years. They are just names.
Even of you like Wilders better (assuming you think a lot of BErmaine) both their records are very comparable. Any honest knowledgeable boxing fan would agree, or at least the vast majority would agree. The fact they are comparable speaks volumes about Wilders record to date. Well especially when one considers that Wilder is a belt holder. Personally I bet Wilder is better than Pulev, but that doesn't change the fact that their resumes should be graded basically as equal.
Yeah, it's bizarre how he's become a "bum" since then, despite only losing to the best and then getting a career best win afterward in Chisora. Course, he WAS overhyped at the time. I read an article from a legitimate sportswriter at the time saying it was Wlad's best defense since Haye. Somehow he forgot about Povetkin, who had a MUCH better resume even at that time.
Nah he became the IBF mandatory in December I believe. He beat Chisora in an eliminator that summer and was due to fight Parker (who beat Takam in an eliminator), but then Parker was offered the WBO shot against Ruiz so Pulev was just made full mandatory from there. Didn't know about the regional titles though, I thought it was Povetkin hoovering those up as he climbs the ladders again.
