I sometimes just hit the bag at my local gym after a workout. I did some boxing training once a week for 6 months a few years ago but that was it.

Whilst hitting the bag the other day using some new gloves I bought (MMA style gloves, the type that end at the second/middle knuckles) my second/middle/knuckles started getting sore and then I noticed I had busted them all open and were bleeding (the second/middle knuckles).

Is this due to incorrect technique and making contact with the bag with the wrong part of my fist/hand? I would assume these gloves are made to avoid this so maybe I should be making contact higher up on my knuckles (more towards top knuckles) and it is my technique that is flawed?

TLDR: Hitting bag and roughing up my middle knuckles, should I be making contact higher up towards my top knuckles?

You shouldn't use MMA gloves to hit the heavy bag. Not even MMA fighters do that.

You need to wrap your hand properly and use boxing gloves, preferably 16oz.

It is not so much your technique, its just the bag leather, it will scuff your skin, wrap your hands and wear actual bag gloves like Drachenorden said.
