Here's a fascinating article from Sports Illustrated in 1983 that offers a detailed study of the beginnings of Pugilistic Dementia in fighters. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1120728/1/index.htm Of particular interest for me is the testing of Jerry Quarry back when he showed no outward signs of being punchy but was already showing a degeneration of cognitive ability.Especially when you consider he was still able to get a boxing license as late as 1992. Also the fact learned people were still readily looking for excuses for Ali's clearly slurred speech and impaired movement as late as 1983 when the evidence of the effects of his long career were blatanly obvious is staggering. The dangers fighters expose themselves to in their careers is all too apparent when looking at what happened to the Quarry's and Ali and I for one will never take a fighters courage for granted again.
