There are two schools of thought on punching power, many believe that "Punchers are born, not made" meaning certain people are just born with the APTITUDE to become KO punchers. The other school of thought is that punching power can be developed over time. My favorite fighter of all time dempsey advocates the latter belief in his book Championship Fighting. In my personal opinion based on my experience is that punchers are indeed born not made, i do not mean they come out of there mothers throwing full body punches with the correct torque but after they get basic technique they tend to hit heavily just naturally. Dempsey argues that power punches have been doing in so long it feels natural and that they dont have to think about it, however they are forgetting all the hours of technique they have been instructed over many years. When Tyson was asked this question by smitty on an episode of "in this corner" he said that cus always told him they are born not made and then cites Tommy hearns as an example. Currently I would cite a guy like Marcos Maidana who is 140 pounds for most fights but he punches like a middle-weight. He is not the most techniqual but he can punch. Opinions please!

By training and better use of your legs, hips and shouldermuscles plus increased strength and timing because of training all contribute to becoming a dangerous puncher.

But still the greatest punchers are born, and sometimes it's even hard to find an explanation why boxer X hits that incredibly hard, and boxer Y doesn't while he's physically stronger, faster and has excellent timing too...

PS I don't believe in gods, so that couldn't be it either... :D

Look at George Foremans knockout win against Moorer. It looked as if the punch didn't even reall connect. Don't even mention the technique of Foremans punch :D

Also there's a huge difference in sort of punchingpower.

Some hits from punchers feel like you've been hit by a sledgehammer, others feel like a wreckingball... also the effect is quite different.
There are punchers that knock you down everytime they hit you clean and have lots of TKO's (like Hide used to) and some that just completely remove you from your senses (like Tua for instance) and have lots of real KO's.

Naturally heavy-handed guys like Foreman have an innate power which relies more on natural strength than technique.

Explosive KO artists like Jackson seem to rely more on speed & timing than sheer brute force.

Certainly a lot of truth to the 'born and not made' train of thought. But although power is more nature than nurture. It CAN be improved.

One can be trained to punch hard. Although some people naturally know how to throw their body into their punches and have the mindset to commit to their punches. A lot have to do with their minds.

Punchers are born. I grew up knowing a lot of guys that where thin and wiry and they hit like HW's. This is why I have been mentioning in past how so many people throw away talent whether it be a fighter or a baller. Yes, you can develop some power with technique, but notice how I said some. I am an example. I use to KO others in street fights, but never considered boxing at age twelve and thirteen. When I did learn in my twenties, I was told by other fighters and trainers how hard I hit with both hands and how I could have been a good boxer if I had taken up the sport at an early age. So with someone who is born with the power and then you apply the technique you get a Tyson.

Well that Kind of Contradicts what Cus says here, from a Mike Tyson video

    Cus D'amato -

"There is no such thing as a Natural Puncher, there is a Natural Aptitude for punching and that is different. No one is born the best, you have to practice and train and you become the best"

I suppose it can improved upon with technique, or at least made to be more consistent, but pure punching power is innate. No doubt about it.

Paulie is a pro and past champion and I am sure he trained to develop power. Either you have it or not. Again, how many people you know growing up that got into street fights and has KO power and they are not thinking about putting their bodies into the punch or even thinking about it. They just hit hard. You have to take those guys to the ground if you don't want to go to sleep and have some one quote the movie Friday.

Tommy Hearns was not a puncher as a amatuer..

155 fights only 7 stoppages.... (incredibly light compared to his pro career)

muscular conditioning and growth is a huge factor people overlook

His style was that of a high-volume boxer in the ams. Not to mention he hadn't grown into his body or his legs fully. He could always crack from what I understand.
