Punching Power--Lennox or Larry?

Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Hydraulix, Jan 22, 2011.

  1. oliver mccall said that bert cooper and buster douglas were harder puncher than lewis. i voted lewis, but to say "hands down" is bull****.

holmes had better jab, better chin, more heart,he was faster and he was much better fighter. lewis had harder right hand.

Larry still punched plenty hard, but Lennox simply had more pure power in his right hand. Holmes's jab was harder than Lewis's.

Lennox Lewis was one of the biggest right hand punchers in heavyweight history. Larry Holmes had some pop but he was not in Lennox's league as a puncher ...

cmon. how many times have we seen larry club the **** out of someone with power punch after power punch and he still couldnt finish the fight with his opponent on the deck..
scott frank, ken norton, marvis frazier, tex cobb, the list goes on.

As far as pure punching power goes,it's Lennox. No contest.

Then there are ones where he lands a single right hand and the person goes down for the count, like Evangelista and Shepard.

Lewis probably had more power in his jab than Larry did in his righthand. :blood

I dont think so. Lewis had a very good jab himself, it just wasnt the main part of his style like it was for Holmes. That post was a bit of a joke, but Lewis in my book is one of the hardest righthand punchers in boxing, Larry isnt close in comparison.

Only on punching power? No contest! The winner is Lewis.

However, had the two fought in their respective prime, Larry would outpoint Lennox.

I believe Larry Holmes hit quite hard. I'm sure that whenever a new sparring partner or opponent of his got in the ring, they instantly felt the sting from that jab and the accurate right hand. His right-hand knockdowns of Cooney and Marvis Frazier were really sweet. Right on the button and lightning fast.

However, he did need to club a lot of opponents into submission, i.e. Shavers II, Frank, Cobb, Snipes, Ali, Bey, etc. I saw him fight a journeyman on an aircraft carrier. That was another opponent he completely outclassed but couldn't finish. He's a hard puncher, but not an astronomical hitter like Lewis. The only men I've seen him tee off on without much effect are Vitali Klitschko, Oliver McCall and Mavrovic. All of them have cast iron jaws.
