Everyone knows about stepping with the jab. My question is what are your thoughts on stepping with the rear hand? Instead of keeping the rear foot planted for the straight/cross, who likes to bring that foot forward when they punch?

In what situations would you use this?

what combos or vs what defense would you use it?

I see a skilled guy at my gym throw a lead right while stepping and then he steps with his left foot while he unloads a killer hook. I asked him about it and he says he uses it aginst guys that go backwards or that try to step laterally to their right against him.

U mean a "leaping" left hook? Or pretty much jumping into ur punches?

I slide forward; I drag my rear foot as I push off and pivot on it firing off the right, and then I push off my back foot and slide my lead leg forward while pivoting it so that I can throw the left hook. You step forward with the force of the pivot, if you get my meaning. This is how I always understood it to work.

I never do that, the only way i work in boxing is forcing the guy to come to me, i never follow. I usually open the distance between my legs a little bit and lean my head forward keeping my right glued to my face and my left loose to provoke him, just as soon as he throws the shot he came back to my reach defenceless, Lean back then lean back forward using all your weight on a straight.. In my opinion following is never good (atleast doesn't work well for me)

EDIT: Go to 2:45 for the perfect example

I usually do not follow opponents aswell. I pressure them with lateral movement and i move up when they move back, but still out of striking distance. Slowly traps them and isnt very difficult to do. I also sometimes step out with my back foot to take an angle. (i am left handed)

Kind of... But it's not the Kangaroo hook that Floyd Patterson used to use. Nor is it that explosive leaping in with the lead left hook like Roy Jones did.

I guess it's just more of a footwork setup. The straight right is a throwaway punch. To raise the guard, or to have them roll to their right. Then a med or long range hook can be delievered with the step of the left.

i know what you mean. id rather not square up after throwing a straight. in the event someone ducks under the straight your left squared up. they angle off and fire off.
