Punchstats: Calzaghe lands 232 punches on Hopkins....GET REAL!!

As people have said punchstats are not scientific. Calzaghe throws a hell of a lot of punches so I'm not surprised the numbers high. His punches may look slappy & may not be powerful but they do the job and are scoring shots.

If the fight had been in the UK Hopkins would have been DQ for cheating.
JC went to America at the end of his career with bad,brittle hands and beat him in his own backyard.
Anyone who 'fought' how Hopkins did that night did not deserve to win.

 

That fight was pretty close in every round, but it wasn't really a close fight.

If Hopkins had done that little bit more in a few more rounds, the fight was his. Calzaghe couldn't hurt him, yet for some reason Hopkins felt like he had to spend the whole night running away and holding. Maybe he was looking for a big counter to put Calzaghe on his ass for good? I don't know. Fact is that Calzaghe was the daddy in that fight. Hopkins had his moments, but they were just that: moments.

 

Calzaghe landed too many punches on Hopkins that night which just goes to prove that Nard wasn't strategically well prepared. I don't know about 232 punches but I wouldn't be surprised if they were in about that neighbourhood since he landed in those numbers in his previous fight with Kessler too. Hopkins found himself trapped in corners and on the ropes which is not only his wrongdoing but also Calzaghe's merit to push him into those spots where he could land on the arms, elbows, chest, everywhere since Hopkins is not known to defend himself well there like Mayweather does with shoulder-rolls and skipping, ducking, slipping.

Uncle Rico - I respect your opinion mate but in my opinion Calzaghe was at least as far from his prime as Hopkins was. You may feel Hopkins stamina had faded a little but Calzaghe had tottaly lost his power, I know Calzaghe wasn't exactly Jack Johnson in his prime, but he still had enough pop to really bust guys up in his day along with his speed. His chin wasn't what it was either imo.

Calzaghe was having title fights from the age of 24 as well, Hopkins first won a title when he was about 30. Calzaghe wasn't exactly a spring chicken either. They were both different fighters in their peak but you've pretty much had it from the horses mouth who was to blame for that falling through.
As for your point about the opponents resume, yes I do think that matters because it says what level that guy is operating at. Hopkins is still the number one at light heavy in most peoples eyes.

Calzaghe landed easily that many punches. Calzaghe didnt beat Hopkins on workrate, he beat Hopkins because Calzaghe managed to land his left more than Hopkins could land his right.

Accept it that Calzaghe beat Hopkins in America, at a new weight, with 3 American judges, Cortez as ref, landing more punches on Hopkins than anyone ever, forcing Hopkins to ***** out as the fight went on, scoring the single highest score against Hopkins ever, all sandwiched between Hopkins best wins of Tarver, Wright and Pavlik.

Hopkins couldnt beat old bloated Calzaghe. For the Hopkins nuthuggers that hang on to A Byrds scorecard, go on Google and type in A Byrd and see what comes up about her scoring of fights .
If Hopkins thought he was winning he wouldnt have been trying so hard to get timeout and points deducted off of Calzaghe.
Remember how after the fight people wanted Hopkins to retire because of hw bad Calzaghe made him look, including Roach in Hopkins corner .

Live with it and accept that Calzaghe beat Hopkins :smoke

 

I've only seen the fight once (when it was live), and I remember at the time thinking that it could go either way.

But I thought Calzaghe deserved the win because he was the only guy who actually wanted to fight.

The fight was just horrible to watch, and we all have Hopkins to thank for that.

 

when you say "many people" you mean bitter b-hop fans mostly. American TV had Calzaghe winning by 4 rounds (HBO) and boxing publication all gave it to Calzaghe.

The split decison was due to home judges favoring hopkins. America is just as bad as anywhere else in that regard.

It was a clear win for Calzaghe by round 2 minimum.

Calzaghe humped Hopkins in front of millions of people!!!!! Even if he landed only one meaningful punch, he still won the event.

 

I can believe that Calzaghe landed 232 punches. He normally threw more than 1000 per fight. It was a horrible fight to watch but Calzaghe won by at least two rounds, and neither fighter was at their prime!

 

I say alot of those punches were hitting gloves,air and shoulders/arms.

Some hit the side of Hops head.
