It has always amused me when the chief Johnson hater on this forum states that JackJohnson could have gotten huge purses for defending against his fellow black fighters Langford,McVey, and Jeannette. In the past this clown has bandied about figures like $100,000 for Johnson to defend against them in Australia ,Russia etc,but he has never come up with a single concrete offer from a promoter anywhere near approaching such amounts. To bring some realism to things here are two of the offers for the 1910 Johnson v Jeffries fight in Reno ,the fight billed as the Fight Of The Century. Hugh D McIntosh who had promoted the Johnson v Burns fight in Australia and also Langford v McVey and Johnson v Lang, Burns v Squires , and Johnson v Felix, offered a bid of $75,000. The National Sporting Club in London offered a measly $50,000.As we know Tex Rickard won the purse bid with an offer of $101,000 plus a percentage of the film rights. That being the case , which promoter, anywhere in the world would have offered $100,00 for Johnson to defend against a another black fighter?
