I'm still not sure myself on how this works exactly. What I DO know is that if it's for a title it's the above weight class. So this is a middleweight fight regardless if it's 155 or 160, because the middleweight title is on the line. I hate it too, but that's how it works. At least that's what it said on wikipedia
afaik it's up to the boxing organisation to sanction it for the belt or not. rumour has it from steve kim that loeffler from k2 promotions was trying to negotiate with the wbc so the cotto vs canelo fight wouldnt be for the wbc mw title, unless the winner agrees beforehand to fight ggg.
so what im saying is if the boxing organisation actually did its job to promote fairness between fighters and integrity of the belt, they wouldnt allow it. but then again greed usually wins out so yeah...
Yeah, belts should only be on the line if at's the specific weight class. There's already too many divisions and this only makes it worse. Yeah the organisations are all about money, that's why there are so many belts so they can get more sanctioning fees. Part of the reason I think Golovkin is good for the division is that he'll stay and unify all the titles so we don't have to deal with this ****.
In fairness, like I've always said, Cotto took on the huge gamble by taking on the suicidal mission of taking on Maravilla when neither Floyd nor Pacman wanted anything to do with him. Roach, like in the Oscar fight, felt Maravilla was done and he was right. Had Mayweather or Pacquiao taken Maravilla's offer at 154.5-155 they would of been middleweight champs. So even if it seems Canelo does deserve at least 40%, Cotto at the sametime does deserve the huge payday and retire for going into the shark pit and taking on Maravilla. If Maravilla had been in his prime and Cotto did what he did that's a Duran-like performance we talking about, but unfortunately Martinez was done. Still, he took the risk. It's to me a passing of the torch in some ways as both have many similarities and are known as action fighters and Canelo ha had been compared to Cotto stylistically for years. I agree Cotto deserves the huge payday, but Canelo should be getting more. That just shows the confidence Canelo has going into this fight.
Wow! Didn't Canelo get over 10 mil for PBF? I figured the money split would be closer to 50/50 Cotto owned Canelo in purse negotiations no doubt.
But performance wise in there respective Mayweather fights Cotto looked the better... Plus he's looked good recently, however this is a great time to cash out BIG time!! Cant wait for this fight
Oscar isn't a fool. They had to agree or else who would Canelo fight? Andrade? Geale? The Dirrells? Any of those guys have a good chance at beating Canelo and then there goes Golden boys only hope. Fact
Just goes to show how corrupt boxing is.... Cotto is milking his fake belt for all it's worth, avoiding GGG and getting a career high(correct me if I'm wrong) payday/cashout. Not to mention that Canelo will be the clear favorite here, yet he's only getting a little more than 25%. This is disgusting. Not a bad fight at all, but it's just a perfect example of the corruption, and favoritism that still plagues boxing to this day.
People are actually mad Cotto is making bank this fight smh why. Between the two who has been in mega fight's for a decade now and is the biggest name next to May/Pac. If Cotto wasn't with TR he would of been making big money sooner.
"A bit one sided" is an understatement. This purse slit is WAY one sided IMO and speaks volumes about the standing of each fighter in relation to each other.
