Yea Cotto had a guaranteed purse of $15mil and Canelo had $5mil making the split a massive 75/25 in favour of Cotto. Cotto made $22mil in total because the fight did 900,000 PPV. Promoters pocket the majority of the PPV upside and broadcasters and fighter get fixed %. For Canelo to make around $30mil, this fight needs to do over 2 million PPV. Not a chance.. He'll make around $11/15mil for this fight.

 

I thought it'd be a lot more for Lemieux & Matthyse!

Let's say like you said Cotto made $22mil on 900K PPV with a 75/25 split

And let's assume Alvarez has a 65/35 split against Chavez and the fight does 1M ppv sales.

Then if you do the math Alvarez is making $21M.

 

Look the Joshua vs Klitschko fight was USD $26 and sold over 1.5M which is over $39M in PPV revenue.

The Canelo vs Chavez fight is $70 and is expected to sell over 1M which is over $70M in PPV revenue. That's 80% more PPV revenue.

Now factor in that Jacobs and Wlad probably split the purse even, while Canelo is getting the lion's share of the purse for his fight against Chavez.

Who's making more money, Canelo or Jacobs?

 

Yea if it does a million PPV he makes around 20mil.. I said that in my comment that he could potentially make around the same if not more than AJ. But he's not making 30 to 40mill.

I reckon this does around 700k to 800k PPV. I'm not massively hyped for it.. But the Mexicans might go crazy and buy this in droves in which case Canelo has yet again proved he's a star. We'll see tomorrow I guess.

The maths isn't that simple. In the UK the fight cost £20 ($26) but that's for sky customers. Half the country uses Virgin Tivo box.. So the price was higher. $26 for standard definition and $28 for high Def.

Then the price went up to $33 for people who bought it on the day of the fight. Plus every fight has its own broadcaster deal. Cotto v Canelo has an exclusive deal with a broadcaster in Puerto Rico for example.

HBO and Showtime both paid for rights for this fight in the states, RTL in Germany and broadcaster Ukraine also paid for exclusive rights. Infact this is the first fight since Mayweather vs Pacquiao to be shown in over 140 countries so God knows what the total income for broadcasters and PPV was.

 

1 Mill is a tough ask but if it's been promoted properly in the US then it can do it I guess.

 

1mill PPV buys is a lofty goal I'd honestly be surprised if it surpasses Canelo/Cotto ppv numbers.
