Let's put this into better perspective.

Canelo just fought three undefeated Champions, fought 4 times in less than a year, and is now getting criticized for thinking about moving up to fight a top cruiserweight in his first fight there.

You can't make this up LOL

Oh, and all while giving Beterbiev and Bivol a pass for avoiding each other for exactly 4 years now.

i would have loved to see beterbiev and bivol move up too, and fight briedis, or at least makabu. what are they doing otherwise, something more note worthy? but they know their limitations. canelo dont. and God bless him for it. he still has years left to fight. plenty of time to bring the rest to heel. which gives them time to prove among themselves who can possibly get this man into 5th gear.

They should fight eachother before moving up.

He should move up to LHW unify there and then move onto Cruiser. I cant see him being very competitive at Cruiser as those men are absolute units these days.

That means the Makabu fight Is cherry picked like the Kov fight was.

If he can unify LHW and Cruiser then Ill eat my words. Based on Canelo's track record though I doubt this will happen.

    Anyway, GGG beat him twice.

I think Bivol and Beterbiev need to fight each other. Four years avoiding each other is disgraceful. Maybe once they fight each other winner gets Canelo.

after 4 years, without making eye contact, its time to move on. theyre gonna have to be forced.
i think its a brilliant move by team canelo. they have 3 years of fighting to fill, maximizing legacy and profit. how they fit everyone in, with the best route possible, is what they are trying to formulate. see, they arent trying to find the toughest way for canelo to achieve, like a lot of his detractors are. they want to give him the best chance of success in doing what hasnt been done before.
theoretically, before the end of next year, canelo could be holding titles in 3 different weight divisions at once.

Its disgraceful. LHW could be on fire IF fighters fought one another.

    It's not ducking.

It's diva A-side cherry-picking to give him "Five Division Champ" status.

He's not called out Breidis, or even Okolie - it's Makabu - who was starched by Bellew.

And there is risk/reward going on - it could always backfire, but that depends on the script and Makabu I guess.

In discussions with Reynoso they have obviously decided that given he already won his 175 strap in that farce against Kovalev, Beterbiev and Bivol are high-risk/low-reward opponents.

I can see where they are aiming here, but it's fairly clear what he's doing - and Mauricio and the WBC are enabling the whole thing - more money in their coffers after all. I'm sure Makabu ain't going to knock back what is easily going to be his biggest payday.

It is what it is, I just hope we don't see a repeat of the Kov fight - pitty pat jabs and then starched late... i'm not a tin-foil hatter by nature, but that stunk to high heaven IMO.

If he wants to fight cruiserweights why doesn't he just fight cruiserweights instead of draining them? There's always something with this *****.. example.. Pazienza & Duran went through multiple weights.. So Let's not act like Canelo is doing something totally extraordinary fighting a short cruiserweight at a catchweight when he probably walks around at 190lbs .. The fight will be rigged anyway

I don't want to nitpick George, but there some issues with your post.

    1) Makabu has a fight lined up with Mchunu for early next year in the USA so he won't be rusty if he fights Canelo.
    2) He most certainly didn't not lose to Papin, he clearly beat him. Cieslak on the other hand is the dubious win due to the ridiculous circumstances in Congo.
    3) Makabu is not the worst champion from the bunch at cruiserweight. He is more proven than the likes of Goulamirian, Merhy and Octopus, but definitely Briedis is the top dog and it would have been more impressive had Canelo opted to face him.

But yeah just seems like a really unnecessary fight given the fact that guys like Beterbiev and Bivol are looming around at light heavyweight.

The WBC announced over a year ago that they are lowering the Cruiserweight limit back to 190 lbs. So it wouldn't be a catchweight. When Cruiserweight was original established, it's limit was 190 lbs. It increased to 200 lbs in the 2000s around the time that RJJ beat John Ruiz at Heavyweight. RJJ weighed in a 193 lbs to John Ruiz who weighed in at 226 lbs. If I recall, when RJJ fought Ruiz and weighed 193 lbs he was above the Cruiserweight limit there and then the Cruiserweight limit changed to 200 lbs shortly thereafter.
