Put Hopkins in another era, does he stick out as much?

One of my dream fight would be Monzon vs Bhop. I think he does well in any era I think he would always be second fiddle though if he was in an era with SRR , Monzon or Hagler.

He was green. Compare that Hopkins to the one of Mercado 2. He was sharper 95-03 and a much more well rounded fighter. To be fair, I don't hold his win in the rematch highly as he fought a shell of a fighter whether he avenged a defeat or not.

To answer tommygunn711, Hopkins would've stood out in any era the guy is a genius in the ring but I'm sure he wouldn't stand out as much. He's one of my fav top 3 but he wouldn't have 20 title defenses if he fought the men Monzon and Hagler faced plus a few more in their times. I wouldn't count him out though as the man is crafty and knows how to stay competitive in a fight.

Come on though, he's an accurate puncher, he can weave them.

    I know, i know.

Hopkins just annoys me too much these days.

Incidentally, i think Hopkins was a very good aggressive slugger\volume punching boxerpuncher from early on.But he didn't have the footwork using that style to compete with Jones, or probably a number of the other better middleweight technicians. Not truly comfortable on the frontfoot in such an aggressive manner, which i think probably contributed to the subsequent evolving of styles.

Hopkins would have been an elite fighter in any era even if it meant playing second fiddle.

I think he would profit from having more fights in the eras where more fights were the norm. He was a fighter who got his craftiness and skill through experience. More fights = more experience = better Hopkins. Yeah, a bit simple.

Anyway, an elite fighter in one era would always be an elite fighter in another era as well.

    Well, that's just blatantly false.

good post this is how i see it myself as a fighter of Hopkins caliber he's just so well rounded he would give anyone a go but there are just some eras where he wouldn't be as good as he was but it is what it is

Very good win. Much better than the win Hopkins had in the lackluster rematch(both fights sucked TBH). Also, Jones went on to have one of his best performances against Malinga in his next fight and went on to beat a highly rated Toney a year later in 94. Hopkins was still gaining experience and would go on to put a masterclass against Segundo Mercado in the rematch in '95 then went on to have his successful, long title reign beating fellow future HOF'ers Trinidad(prime and a champion @ MW) and DLH(slightly past prime but gave Hopkins a tough time) in the process.

There's not many who would beat Jones with the major factor being footwork though. Jones isn't a better techniciian than Hopkins either so i just don't see the logic in the post. Hopkins is truly complete stylistically and was at middleweight, so i disagree that he was uncomfortable at all on the front foot, we can break it down. He just got beat by a better and more gifted fighter, who let's have ot right, was called superman for a reason.

Look at Hopkins pre-Jones fights and you will see his defense, ring craft and timing at a very high level. It just wasn't a match for Jones. Hopkins was pretty much prime against Jones
