In Jones' prime, he was top 3 P4P for a full decade. People have a short memory. I don't care if Hopkins is still doing well now, there only maybe 10 other fighters in history that have done what Jones did there. The order the first poster proposed seems blatantly obvious to me, to the point where I don't even understand why there's a debate. Jones is clearly on one tier, Hopkins is clearly one tier down from that, and Toney is clearly one tier down from that. They're all hall of famers, but there's a clear heirarchy.
Jones is clearly #1 just 1 middleweight title and that heavyweight title makes him more great than Hopkins and toney combined
As far as greatest talent at the peak of their respective skill level....I would be inclined to rate them: Jones Toney Hopkins As for reality and the way their respective careers have turned out: Hopkins Toney Jones
Jones is a supreme all time great. The trouble with the other two is this. Hopkins is a gamer who has incredible discipline. Him and Toney are opposites in terms of work ethic, but one can argue that James Toney is the better natural fighter. Plus, Toney was a competitive heavyweight. Something I don't think Hopkins could have been if he would have been a fat slob. - Jason
Excellent post. I should add that Jones's late career losses are the reason why this is even a debate. There is an old adage in boxing that you are only as good as your last fight. Its a shame really because had Jones retired after beating Ruiz or hell even after beating Tarver, he would have gone down as the greatest fighter since Sugar Ray Leonard. My order is clear: 1. Jones 2. Hopkins 3. Toney
