Both Ward and Bute have the tools and the ring IQ to make this fight's outcome unpredictable.Ward clearly has faced the better competision but in term of skills and speed the only elite 168er are Ward, Andre Dirrell and Bute. In terms of offence/defence both used their A-plan to outclass their opposition.I believe there is little varriation in their main offensive and deffensive strategies but let's take a look at them:

Ward's main offensive strategy:
Uses speed and angles to throw and land first (jab or left hook), his first attack succeds most times and from here, with the opponent fixed, he has the initiative.He uses upperbody movement to avoid counters and continues attack; he moves on the outside using the ring, he attack again the same way when he sees the opportunity

Ward's main defensive strategy
If his main attack doesn't give him the upper hand he'll either clinch or go inside. Against the hardpuncher and slow Abraham he clinched more often as it way easier to lock AA's hands; AA wasn't too effective landing power punches anyway. But most cases he transform the boxing dance into an inside fight. Or more of a pushing contest in which very good long jabbers like Kessler anf Froch have a hard time dealing with. Opponent shoud try to move outside but that hard beacause Ward ussualy traps one of their hands (only one who matched him in this puching contest was Bika) Another thing Ward does on the inside is break his opponent locked hands, he uses his hands to tear down their guard. I believe Ward has had intensive inside training maybe against professional wrestlers. Good for him


Bute's main offensive strategy
First of all, land the jab, to keep opponent at bay; he looks after openings and footwork advantages, he preffer to be accurate and land with power; when in range he tries to keep the opponent thinking by moving his head; he is taking more time then Ward preparing his attack, he likes more to counter while moving back. Sometime on offensive he hits so hard that the opponent will only keep a high guard, and that when he beguns to let his hands go


Bute's main defensive strategy
he uses lateral movement or jumps back when attacked; but after 3-4 rounds he began to throw counters guessing his opponent will attack: uppercut to the body and the chin, left hooks to the body and chin when the chalangers tries to close the distance, and right hooks to the head when he in too close; as long as he lands those with power tho opponent takes notice and either goes on defensive or attack carelessly

I really can't see how this fight will pan out. I doubt any of the above strategies will be totally effective against eachother

Bute's power will keep Ward honest; with the prediction i'll go against the mainstream: with neutral judges Bute close but clear UD

 

If Bute won't succeed to catch Ward with some hard uppercuts to the body/chin and K.O/T.K.O him I don't think he can deafeat Ward ! Ward has an adaptable style to his opponent style and brake your game plan .

On the other side, Bute is a smart southpaw who hits hard , has good speed, good footwork and he's slick. Ward dindn't had this kind of opponent during the s6 tournament !

It's very hard to predict this fight but if Bute won't succeed to K.O/T.K.O Ward , it would be hard for him ( Bute ) to win by decision especially in Ward's hometown.

The thing is, I don't think there is anything Bute could do that Ward couldn't adjust to. Ward's the biggest stylistic chameleon of his generation. As soon as Bute starts timing Ward's jab, Ward is doing something else entirely.
