No surprise there. The scoring in Balla vs. Brubaker last year when he captured the Aussie title was extremely generous to Balla as well - and that was at the same venue, 13 miles from Balla's home.

Furthermore, the judge that night that had it the widest for Balla was Aneeka Williams of Melbourne - the same one that handed in a 99-89 card for him tonight.

 

Jake Carr vs. Dane Mulivai, 10 rounds @ super middleweight

 

Like the co-feature, this is for a national Australian title.

Unlike the co-feature (in which neither could bust an eggshell with their best combination), both guys actually have some pop so it may not go ten.

 

Well, yeah, and they're even more notorious for it down there.

 

Round 1

Mulivai is walking in, guard up. Double jab and slicing right on the body by Carr. Mulivai tries a jab as Carr backs out to reset. Carr weaves in low and works combos on the body. Carr lowers himself and fades outside before Mulivai can track him with a jab. Feints on the outside by Carr, and body shots moving in. Nice head movement and hula-hooping by Carr, making Mulivai miss with his pecking jab. Mulivai tries a right hand after three quick set-up jabs but Carr is too far out. Carr gets into Mulivai's chest, guard up tight around his face, working short hooks. Lead right up top by Carr. 1-2 on the body by Mulivai, caught on the elbows. High and low jabs by Carr. Left upper-hook by Carr, grazing as Mulivai comes forward and moves his arm to deflect.

Mulivai is huge for 168lbs.

 

Round 2

Jabs traded as they circle. Mulivai is dropping in right hands and getting countered by a 3-2 from Carr. Body shots by Carr ducking in close. Right hand on the ear by Carr. Straight jab from the chin by Carr, defenses very tight as he circles in on Mulivai. Double jab on the body by Carr. Mulivai is caught with a left hook leaning over looking for space to land his own.

Round 3

Mulivai lands a solid hook as Carr is ducking and moving around him. Carr is working body shots in bunches as he leans over and makes frequent crop-dusting passes on Mulivai. Single uppercuts and straight rights loaded up by Mulivai, turning and facing up to Carr. Long jab by Mulivai, hands down on the outside. Carr loops a right hand up top, around the left glove of Mulivai. 1-2 by Mulivai, backing Carr into a corner. Clinch. Left uppercut by Mulivai.

Round 4

Mulivai is backhanding jabs up from the hip, using his reach advantage. Carr ducks in behind the guard and puts up his shorter jab. Mulivai is waiting for Carr, leaning down on him with both forearms when he comes in with jabs and rights from a dip to either side. Nice left hook by Carr leaping in. Mulivai keeps the jab paddling out as Carr is circling on the outside. Carr is sneaking in body shots as he moves.
