Qawi = Beast! I just watched him demolish Mike Rossman, great performance. Ive seen Qawi against Saad 2x, Rossman, Holyfield 2x, L Spinks, M Spinks, Foreman but are the any other fights of his that i should watch? i love his style he really lived upto his nickname.
You will see a real best in Dwight during the first round with Eddie Davis. That was Dwight at his best. After that he was never the same again. Davis got back into the fight when the intensity of Qawi's attack slowed and ended after 11 hard fought rounds in which Dwight had his nose busted by an uppercut. You'll love that fight
Qawi was great, very underrated. Tough, relentless, and a very skilled inside technician. I rate him either in or just outside the all time LHW top 10; and he may have been the 2nd best cruiser champ ever (after Holyfield). Personally, I think he'd have taken any LHW that's come along since Spinks.
I am a fan of Qawi. I love watching his fights, they are always action packed. You never have a dull moment watching him.
Man!! that was a war. I cant believe Davis managed to get up and that the ref did not stop it there and then, great fight, that was a complete war all the way. Was impressed with Davis to he showed some nice counter punching skills, i think he tired a bit towards the end especially when Qawi started sinking those lefts into his body. I noticed something in this fight that i have not noticed before with Qawi, he has that same sneaky right hand that Bert Cooper had
Yesiree indeed. He also beat James Scott at Rahway. His timing of punches was impeccable.Great fighter, period.
I saw that fight when it was broadcast live on TV in 1981. I knew immediately that Qawi was soon to be champion. My reasoning was based on the ease and thoroughness with which Qawi beat Rossman. It wasn't that Qawi won the fight that impressed me -- he was favored to win -- but just the manner in which he won. Only two years earlier, Rossman had remained on his feet despite taking Victor Galindez's best punches. That fight went nine rounds, with Rossman still fighting back before retiring on his stool. Rossman showed his durability that day. But against Qawi, Rossman seemed wobbled by every power-punch he took. Qawi even put Rossman down for a 10 count in round seven. Simply put, Qawi bulldozed right through Rossman, displaying greater strength than even Galindez had shown. Sure enough, Qawi demolished Saad Muhammad for the WBC title just months after beating Rossman.
And everyone forgets that nobody was picking Qawi to win that fight. Nobody. Everyone thought Qawi would be out at that range where the tail end of Saad's lefthook and end of his right hand would be and he'd get ko'd. By the time of their rematch, there were still some folks thinking Saad would ko the guy, But most people pretty much figured all those tough fights had finally caught up with him. and that was a real bad licking he took from Qawi in that first bout. Most guys don't comeback from that kind of sustained beating that ends with the late ko and there's quite a bit of deterioration. Some other good Qawi bouts are his Dwight Braxton fights they had on early ESPN.
Quawi may have been one of the very toughest men to ever put foot into a ring. Not one of the best, but one of the toughest.
holyfield , qawi , toney , reggie johnson , jorge castro : that's tough saad muhammad , marvin johnson - that's very much less. that in response to the exaggeration in the thread about marvin johnosn vs. michael moorer.
atschsaad muhaman and marvin johnson not tough. when muhammad was in his pomp he was every bit has tough as any light-heavy.it was a good era for the division post foster ,with galindez, conteh, ahumada, yaqui lopez+muhammad and johnson coming to the fore.
