I can see why people would pick Saad over the less experienced Qawi but when you watch both fighters fight it makes you think WOW, because Qawi's styles was so wrong for Saad, prime or not imo. I like Saad but one of his biggest flaws that stood out to me is his lack of accuracy and against Qawi who was pretty good at slipping punches it sounds like a recipe for disaster. You might disagree with me here but i dont think Saad had the best stamina either, although he was in some brutal fights and lasted the distance or knocked his man out a lot of time. I know its easy to say this after the fact though, when you know! what happened and how the styles matched up, plus Qawi was not that experienced at that level really so i can understand why he was favourite.
You are one of the dumbest posters I have ever had the misfortune of seeing on here, and since I`ve been a member of this site for 7 years thats saying a lot. Saad and Marvin not tough? are you ****ing serious? It just so happens that I re-watched both Marvin Johnson/Leslie Stewart fights this past weekend and the beating Marvin took in the second Leslie Stewart fight was nothing short of an amazing display of courage. Pops got hurt and dropped in the first round and was for all intents and purposes done from that point on, his legs and reflexes were both gone and Stewart battered him unmercifully. Yet he tried like hell and fought his heart out for the next six rounds before eventually being stopped. He went out on his shield and even though he had nothing, he kept trying until the bitter end because he knew no other way, and yet you have the ****ing nerve to question this mans toughness and courage? None and I repeat NONE of the fighters you mentioned have shown a fraction of the sheer guts and determination Johnson and Saad did in their heyday, and frankly just who the **** are you to question the courage of these men who are universally seen among ardent boxing fans and followers of the sport as being among the bravest and toughest the lightheavyweight division has ever seen? Do all of us and especially yourself a favour by putting a plastic bag over your head and closing it tightly around your neck tonight before going to sleep, trust me you`ll wake up a lot smarter than you are now thats for sure you ****ing nitwit.
It is a myth that Marvin Johnson lacked durability. I don't know how that myth got started. True, Johnson was kayoed dramatically by Saad, Spinks, and Mustafa Muhammad. However, these three opponents were unusually dangerous punchers. To be kayoed by Saad, Spinks or Mustafa Muhammad does not necessarily imply that the loser has a bad chin. In fact, if you watch the films of Johnson's fights against Saad, Galindez, and Mustafa, you'll see that he repeatedly demonstrates his capacity to absorb a heavy shot. Saad and Mustafa really had to wear Johnson down to get him out of there.
Amen. You kind of have to give these younger guys a get out of jail free card with their assessments they make from boxing records and reputations. They just didn't have the pleasure to watch the sport at a time when there wasn't an abundance of titles. And during a time when in a tough competitive division, everybody fought each other. Minimal cherry picking & that's just not how things are done in recent times. And they didn't wait 2/3 years to build up big fights. Show up with your B game in that LH division from about 1968 to 1985 and you lost. Hell, the division was so competitive that showing up with your A game lead to losses. But guys like Johnson sure do seem to fly under the radar screen these days and he always had exciting fights. In recent times, the only guys that always give exciting fights were Gatti and maybe Mayorga but that type has become an endangered species and don't seem to be appreciated thru time. And neither will Gatti or especially Mayorga.
The late 1970s and early 1980s were a great time for light-heavyweights. Perhaps the best in the history of the division? :think
