Sky plussed Classic Boxing and just watched Qawi/Holyfield for the WBA "Junior Heavyweight" title in 1986. WHAT THE F##K WAS THAT ALL ABOUT.........i have read over the years that it was a peach but remember the Cruiser division in the 80's as weak and combined with what Evander did when he moved up a weight never give this fight much thought. WRONG........this was Ali/Frasier but without the back story as they slammed away at each other and you can even hear the shockwaves running down their legs and rattling the canvas......I got punchy just watching it. Everything that Holyfeild did later....taming Tyson, the battles with Bowe etc. can all be traced back to this and respect to the Dwight man for schooling him.
Great fight. My copy has an interview with Holyfield saying that he wants to retire in a couple of years and open a car dealership. 24 years later and he's still fighting......
Qawi was a one tough SOB but Evander was a total monster at crusier. How could it not be a classic?:good
