Was wondering how good was super feather, lighweight and light welter (the divisions Chavez dominated) when he was convincingly beating evreyone. Was it a great period of time for these lower divisions like now or a poor time? Thanks
The Super featherweight division of 84-87 was very strong. The Lightweights in 87/88 were less so, but JCC beat the fighters that mattered (a young Whitaker aside). Again at 140, JCC beat everyone that mattered in 89 to 91, in a division, with an excellent top two or three, but without great strength underneath.
I wish Chavez would've fought Azumah Nelson. That would've been one hell of a fight at sfw in the mid 80s.
great fight!! If I put that one in my head I am not sure what would happen. Nelson could be vicious even against the Chavez caliber.
Nelson would of fallen just short IMO, but in a rematch, who knows? Azumah was arguably the greatest rematch fighter this side of Ray Robinson.
He should have been turning in his rematch performances the first time he fought most of those men imo.
