My opening post states that Quarry gave the interview just prior to his Atlanta fight with Ali. "Just prior to his first fight with Ali ,Jerry Quarry was interviewed in his gym".
mcvey, I apologize; I didn't mean to insult your thread, just the insinuation that Patterson had ever fought dirty. He never did despite what Quarry said (supposedly); if he said it, when did he say it? After, sadly, being in the throngs of early dementia? I stand by my comment that Floyd Patterson NEVER used cheap tactics...EVER!!! It's an insult to his great legacy that something like that would even be mentioned. :verysad
I have to continue to comment here. I've seen both Patterson and Quarry fights (at least) 30 times apiece. One thing's for sure, Floyd (in both) displayed his usual 'passivity' which cost him in numerous bouts too many to mention. He should have stopped Quarry in the initial bout with that bad eye cut but, as only Floyd can do, stayed away from it. Not to mention he did NOTHING in rounds 9-10 letting Jerry salvage a draw. In the second, he won virtually ALL the later rounds doing nothing but out-working Jerry with NO evil intent. In Floyd's bout with Cooper (who I love), he 'cleanly' bided his time before laying Henry out into a brutal 'puddle' KO! And then ran over to him trying to help him in any way possible. If anyone tries to accuse my childhood hero of dirtiness, they're simply a MILE OFF BASE!
Quarry said it before he fought Ali when his brain was presumably fine,I'm not saying he is correct .If Patterson was an acknowledged dirty fighter there would have been no point in my posting it , it's because he was recognized as a gentleman that I thought it was worth posting.I never thought of Frazier as a dirty fighter either.:good
Really,...Patterson fought about as cleanly as a professional fighter was capable of....after all, it isn't amateur boxing...Jerry should have known about the realities of his own profession...and BTW, he should have felt blessed that he received the draw in their first bout and a "win" in the second...I though Floyd won both bouts.
The scoring had to do with that p*** a** California scoring system at the time. But, to be fair, Floyd fought only in stretches, and gave both fights away. In the first fight, despite the second round (glass Floyd jaw? Hardly.) Patterson kicked young Quarry's ASS before going into la-la land in the ninth and tenth letting Jerry salvage a 'draw'.
Jerry Quarry was all over the lot with many of his statements throughout his career and I think this Patterson/Frazier dirty fighter thing was just one more example of it. Floyd wasn't dirty and neither was Smoke.
