Quarry destroyed Bodell in one round. However, Bodell was on quite a run going into the fight and had just beaten Bugner for the Commonwealth and Euro titles. Was Bodell favored to win? Does anyone recall?
I honestly can't remember the odds, but I know who my money would have been on. "Did you find Bodell awkward"? "Well ,he fell awkward". :yep
One of my favorite fights, watching the **** talking arrogant Bodell get destroyed makes me bust a nut everytime I see it. :rofl
Anyone seen the Bodell - Bugner fight? What happened, I'm a big fan of Quarry but I don't think he would of rolled over Bugner the way he outclassed Bodell.
Quarry was pretty warm favourite I think. It was thought as 'maybe a step up too much' for Jack by most- how they were right. :yep
The fight is on You Tube. If you listen to the commentary, the British announcers are quite shocked by the result. I agree Quarry would have had a much harder time with Bugner. But he made Bodell look like an amateur right after Bodell beat Bugner. I wonder whether Bodell underestimated Quarry?
I don't know about underestimating him, he really looked bad, chin up in the air and so easy to hit. I think I remember reading somewhere that Quarry couldn't believe how bad Jack was that night.
I think his style was simply made for Quarry who was a good counter puncher. Bodell's aggression and awkwardness made him a difficult opponent for some, such as Bugner. Even Joe Frazier had to walk through some punishment in the first round against Quarry. Shavers too was stopped in one round.
Probably hit the nail on the head there. Styles make fights! If there was was ever someone made for somebody, that was it.
I've seen bits of Bodell-Bugner. Even in a winning effort, I thought Bodell looked awful and clumsy (especially with his "footwork") in the clips I saw, and it seemed to me as though Bugner simply gave that match and those titles away. If Joe had come in with the same aroused mindset he showed years later in dispatching Denis, he would have destroyed Bodell. (I'm not even British, and Bugner sometimes made me want to tear MY hair out.) Regardless, this was easily Jerry's most devastating win, a legitimately clean one punch knockout, and it came from his less heralded right hand, not the hair trigger hook he was most noted for.
I beleive Mickey Duff rationalised it by saying Bodell was a certain age ,and they could not afford to hang about with him, plus he might just as easily get knocked off in a low earning fight . So **** or bust ,and---- well you know the result.
The funniest thing about this fight to me is the crowd. At the beginning they are cheering Bodell and booing Quarry. At the end they're cheering Quarry and booing Bodell out of the building.
