If Jerry Quarry was around back then, in the mix with schmeling, sharkey, Carnera and baer, how's he do against these guys?. If he gets a title shot verses each one who's losing? Prime Quarry here, the 4 are at the stage where they got the belt.
Why isn't Braddock in the mix? He follows in logical sequence after Baer....the post Tunney, pre Louis heavyweight champs of the 30's.
Id favor him over Baer and Carnera. I think hed smash Braddock. His fight with Sharkey depends on which Sharkey shows up. He beats the headcase version. Schmeling I would slightly favor. Quarry was a guy who just couldnt seem to make it over the hump time after time and seemed to choke during important fights. He was a headcase himself so s lot depends, like Sharkey, which Quarry shows up.
Except for Carnera, they all beat him, including Braddock. Jerry was very good, but not good enough to beat world champions.
Your right, we'll put James J in there to. My personal opinion is quarry beats him by a wide unanimous decision. That's if Jerry takes it seriously unlike baer.
Braddock doesnt beat Quarry. No way in hell. Quarry is better than the vast majority of guys Braddock lost to. Braddock never beat a championship calibre hw. Sorry but I dont believe Baer's non performance was championship calibre or the result of anything Braddock was doing. Outside of that Braddock eaked out a controversial decision over jhl and beat a drunken completely untrained paper champ in Slattery, two lhws. Beyond that his resume as pathetic. With his wide open, inept, shuffle forward style Quarry would be completely at home counterpunching him all night long. Id pick Quarry by stoppage somewhere around the 9th or 10th rds with no trouble at all. Braddock wasnt as good as anyone who beat Jerry Quarry and in fact was much worse than several guys Quarry beat. Quarry may not have been championship material in the talent rich 60s and 70s but neither were 20+ or so guys who beat Braddock and frankly Braddock would have been in the top 20 or 30 in the Quarry's era.
Agreed. Can you imagine Braddock in the the 70 s as a contender? He wouldn't stand a cat in hells chance of breaking the top 40 s.
Quarry could have been champion in that era, but it would have required a bit of luck. He would need to be lucky in terms of who his title shot came up against, and possibly who he drew in the finial eliminator.
Certain types of fighters Quarry was deadly against. Other types, Quarry would figure out a way to lose to. Plus, Quarry changed his original style as a counter puncher with movement, to a more come foward, slugging it out fighter.
Quarry beats Braddock easy, outboxes Baer fairly easy, sets traps and beats Carnera. Sharkey at his best defeats him in great fight. Schmeling who sits back for the right hand beats Quarry in solid fight
I think Schmeling would beat him. A solider and smarter boxer and I think Quarry walks into a lot of rights. Sharkey at his best would be a toss-up. They are rather similar fighters, but Quarry impresses me as the more dangerous puncher with the better chin. But the Sharkey of 1932-33 was not at his best in my judgment but slipping rather badly. Quarry should be able to handle the Sharkey who lost to Carnera. I see Carnera as being a better test for Quarry than others on this board do. Kind of hard to figure as few in history were much like Carnera. Quarry could win it, but if he fights a cautious fight, I see him losing a decision. Unlike others, I see Baer catching Quarry with that right, if Baer is fighting one of his serious fights. But the Baer of the Braddock fight loses to Quarry. I take Quarry over Braddock. *I am not one of the big admirers of Quarry, but the champs of the early 1930's were, other than Schmeling, such a mediocre or in or out bunch that not only Quarry, but many contenders of later decades would probably have had a good shot at winning the title back then. What about Eddie Machen? for example. Elmer Ray? Rex Layne? Cleveland Williams? I can see any of these men potentially winning the title against the 1930's champs. And the list could go on and on.
Schmeling might have had a chance, Jerry lost to punches, these guys would not be able to see (ALI, FRAZIER ETC. ) 1970 Quarry would be pure living hell for any of these guys come on! its a differant era! Jerry knew when to box or slug, these guys would not have made the top ten in Quarry's era!
