This has to be a FOTY type of contest. I have this going to the cards with the winner.....Irish Jerry Quarry!
The reason I like Quarry to edge it is that Michael Dokes didnt have the long left jab to break Jerry's skin open. Its gonna be a firefight at midrange. I believe Quarry might be a little better puncher.
Dokes. Decision or he cuts/swells him for the tko. Real big edge to Dokes in the handspeed department. And he did not have to go back to his corner to be reminded to throw cpmbos. And Quarry is just too easy to hit to win enough rounds against this guy. Everyone seems to reaslly love the Quarry short left hook. It was pretty good but Dokes' is at least as good. And quicker and he threw a lot more of them. So I think Dokes nullifies the Quarry left hook and Dokes holds all the cards with the other punches.
I just don't see Dokes going past seven rounds with Quarry. Quarry would have to survive Michael's usual early-round flurries (not to mention solid left hooks). But, though I'm sure Jerry would get cut all to hell, Dokes never had an exactly iron chin. Quarry catches up to him and corners him ala Coetzee by the eight round, latest. I do want to relent a bit and assert it possible that Dokes stops Jerry on cuts before that time. But Quarry would rally before then...Dokes was nowhere near an Ali, Frazier, Norton...not even on a much higher a level than Shavers, imo. A paper champion who was gifted the title from a grossly premature stoppage, then he lost it to Weaver in the rematch (imo). Nothing more. Holyfield had difficulties with him because of Michael's being a born heavy (as opposed to Evander's essentially Cruiserweight frame). Bowe kicked the dogsnot out of him.
Probably not because there would be a good possibility of Holmes cutting Jerry up with his jab. Straight punches. Quarry would have some moments but Holmes would have answers for that.
I'm not sure if Quarry wins here, yes he had a lot going for him. I just see fast handed Dokes taking him out after been behind.
I see Jerry Quarry stopping Michael Dokes late in the contest. Dokes does have superior speed in this one, but Jerry did have a good chin, and was a very good counter puncher. While Jerry was stopped by the likes of Muhammad Ali, George Chuvalo, Joe Frazier, and Ken Norton, he would hang in there with Dokes. Jerry would come on to stop Michael in round 12, much the same way he stopped Thad Spencer, on Feb 3 1968.
Dokes started fast and held onto a draw with Weaver in rematch. Similar scenario when Ellis vs Quarry ( except Ellis won ) . Dokes edges Quarry pts.
Dynamite Dokes ( And I do not use the term lightly) Would have had a helluva time beating a 1973 confidence trained (Gil Clancy) Quarry -or a 1970 focused Jerry Quarry. I throw this fight up to a closed circuit, or pay per view, get your popcorn ready!
Dokes does have the faster hands but not as great an advantage as some might think, Dokes actually wasn't that much of a mover so Jerry wouldn't have to look for him that often. I like Quarry in a fight that becomes a shoot out .
Quarry by decision, maybe late stoppage. Dokes would be within range of Quarry's punches, as Dokes kinda reminds me of a T-Rex with what seemed like short arms. A prime Quarry was pretty quick, could move well and more difficult to hit (in his prime) than fans give him credit for. Watch the Ron Lyle fight. Dokes was fast with his fist and threw good combos. Dokes problem with Quarry would be Quarry would trade with him in the combo exchanges and get the better of Dokes. Throw in Quarry was a much better body puncher and Dokes chances to win get slimmer.
