I was watching some fights of both of these guys recently and think they would match up well with each other. I know Mugabi had way more fights at 154 but Quartey was an exceptionally strong welterweight who beat some really good fighters and lost close fights to some to a couple of hall of famers (Oscar/Winky). In my opinion he beat Forest cleanly at 154. We all know Mugabi hit like a truck but Quartey with his high guard, excellent jab and toughness makes this a really intriguing match between to great Adrican fighters. Who do you have in this one?
Assume this is the Beast of Hagler fight. This version fought Hagler who had a even more ramrod job than Ike and if it weren't for Hagler ATG chin the Beast would have won. The Beast ko in 7 rds.
Got to go with Mugabi on this one if were talking prime vs prime. Before Hagler broke him mentally and took away his confidence ''The Beast" was a major force to be reckoned with. Some of the power shots he landed on Hagler stops almost all Jr.Middles and Middles in history not named Monzon, Hagler,Lamotta or Walker. Quartey was tough as nails, but I don't see him taking Mugabi's power cleanly. " The Beast" would catch him and KO him.
Pre-Hagler Mugabi would pull the trick. I think Marvin destroyed Mugabi, and to a certain extent, vice versa. Quartey was rather a one-note samba.... but it was a very effective samba. I thought DLH squeaked out a win as did Lopez but they were both very close. Mugabi brings a level up in power. He was fairly relentless against Hagler. If he is the same against Quartey he will find him.
Mugabi is a tough fighter to rate. He punched hard and his 26-0 record proves that, but he is a little overrated just because of the Hagler fight. Hagler was inactive for a year after Hearns and looked bad and it was a rainy night in Vegas that night, and the cold made it so I think both guys had to warm up. Just a bad night for Marvin.. Other than that, what did John do?
I'm bucking the trend here, I think Quartey has to good of a jab along with high guard defense for Mugabi to hurt him. Therefore I say Quartey out boxes him and takes a decision.
I agree with you. I believe Quartey was the better fighter and would use his jab to when via UD. I think Ike was every bit as good as Tito , Oscar and Sugar Shane and would be in the hall of fame had he had a couple of decisions go his way and not had those long lay offs.
Right, a few other things I feel compelled to mention is that Ike was knocked down a few time, but never knocked out. Mugabi was knocked out multiple times. Also when Ike fought champions he pushed them and gave them tough fights. When Mugabi fought them he got knocked out.
