At 147, who wins? Felix Tito Trinidad or Ike Quartey and does anyone know why these two didn't fight? 12 rounds, Mills lane reffing, 18.5ft ring
Agreed. Be a fun fight to watch and the type of bout that takes a lot out of both fighters. Both have to dig deep. And like stated above, DKP did not want his guys being forced to dig deep to win. Other matches to be made instead against--surprise of surprises--other guys under DKP.
This fight absolutely should have happened. It would have been an epic battle. I see Quartey starting well, punishing Tito with his jab. Possibly even scoring a flash knockdown. But, as the fight wears on, Tito starts to figure out Quartey's fairly predictable style. Eventually, Tito starts landing that hook, and things go downhill for Quartey. As strong as Quartey was, his chin could let him down on occasions. Trinidad can be outboxed, but, at 147 you can not just bull forward at Tito unless you have an Iron chin. Quartey's aggression backfires mid rounds and he sustains his first stoppage loss.
They were all but ready to fight for late 2998 and then De La Hoya came in and offered Quartey the fight and he took it. I see Quartey getting the better of the first few rounds but he was always a sucker for the left hook and would tire. Tito was an incredible left hook guy and had great stamina. I see Tito taking over in the middle rounds and then laying it on Quartey and stopping him late.
Quartey had a strong jab because he shifted weight onto his left foot and leaned into the punch. As soon as Trinidad sees this and times that move with either a hook or a right hand, the fight is effectively over. Probably the third or fourth round but it wouldn't surprise to see it end right away. Trinidad timed a similar move in the Vargas fight, 15 seconds in.
