My father seems fairly certain of a story he heard about Bob Fitzsimmons setting up a mock smithy in his training camp, where he'd hammer out horseshoes for strength and conditioning. However, I've heard nothing further, and there was nothing about it in Physical Culture or his chapter in Boxing and How to Train.

Can anyone shed any light on the matter?

There are pictures of Fitzsimmons working with a hammer on an anvil.

I thought those might have been from his days as an actual blacksmith?

Bob used to make and hand out shoes to his fans while in camp.
