ive been boxing for a while. never had a fight but i have skills and im not being cocky. now, for fun and with nothing else to do, i wanna start attempting to compete again. I dont have a trainer or a coach anymore but i have a question. can i still participate in shows even if its only my friend with me. we are both 18 and will robably be 19 by the time im back in shape and contending. I mean, is it illegal for me not to have a certified corner man? I just want it to be me and him traveling aronud NY getting fights on the side while i work and train for my acting career. here are some videos of me from 2 years go when i was training. i was out of shape in these videos however, but still, my skills have gotten better [yt]y1fyoGZJfVc[/yt] shadow boxing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38TgBRb09_Q&feature=user
If a tournament is sanctioned by USA Boxing, cornermen need to be USA Boxing certified. Whether they check is another matter. If its a smoker put on by a gym or some other club, its up to the venue if the cornermen need to be certified, but each state may have its own rules. I don't know about New York. Having an untrained teenage buddy work your corner alone is not a good idea
yea i know, and i dont wanna seem like one of thoes kids who do backyard boxing. Thats the reason i posted up the videos so you guys can see that i know what im doing, im well experienced as an amateur. Ive sparred many times, had some personal time with Lou Savarese. My old trainer was an excellent figher in his day, he beat Jimmy Young and Ken Norton in the amateurs. So i know what im doing, ive had proper training and im not just a kid who wants to fight. I see what your saying though, thanks for the response. Do you think its possible to pick up a coach while at the event?
I thought about that. Most trainers will be too wrapped up in their own charges. Have your buddy get certified by USA Boxing. He knows your style better than a stranger. It sounds like you have time
yea its just something for me to do really. im not in school anymore so all im gonna have is work. plus training and studying acting, so i figure itd also be fun and adventurous to travel from gym to gym for little amateur fights with my buddy. he has seen me spar and offers relatively reasonable advice wen i dont see things from inside the ring. how do i find out what gyms are having shows?
Here's a list of gyms in New York State. Call around and let them know you want to compete and they will call you when there's a card. Good luck http://www.boxinggyms.com/addresses/newyork.htm
Hey Nick, first, are you registered with USA boxing? That's the most important. Also, little guy is correct about your cornermen needing to be registered as well. That way they can be in your corner. However, they cannot actually get in the ring. They can lean over the ropes to give you water and all that but you have to be a certified coach to actually get in the ropes between rounds. You can compete 'unattached', a few guys do that. What I've seen is that they make some contacts with clubs nearby and have the coach from another club be in the corner along with their buddy, who is certified.
