He did improve but he was already a very skilful fighter by '72

He would probably have been more of a Jung-Koo Chang than a Graziano imo.Burning bright with impressive natural fighting ability and ring instincts, but not able to maintain discipline for too long, thus a short'ish prime without rounding his tools out and improving.

Why not? Hearns decided to box regardless of Emanual Steward. As far as I understand it, he is the one who snuck out of his house to take buses to get to the other side of Detroit. That is motivation. Regardless of Emanual training him. I am sure with that motivation other trainers could have made him a champion. He started boxing in 1968 at 9 or 10 years old. Someone always trains a great to fight. Most people do not know much about trainers, and only now is a guy like Roach getting credit when Pacman is the great one of the two. As for good fighters, does anyone know who taught Mike McCallum how to box? Probably not. So how significant is it?

Duran is great no matter what. My point was that he was not 1-10 ATG with the guys he beat. I don't think you guys on here really see what I type. You just see what you want to. What makes a great fighter is the motivation to go to the gym all the time and not be deterred by possible beatings. A trainer does not teach that. The fighter is the one who has it in him to box. There are exceptions I am sure, but not when it comes to great fighters.
