Suppose these two fought. Is there any way that Frazier could win? I've always felt that Frazier would beat Louis. He'd slip the jab and connect with left hook counters all night. I think it would be easy for Frazier to cut off the ring, corner Louis and get the K.O. A lot of people disagree with me, though. Is there any way that Smokin Joe would get the duke over the Brown Bomber? I always thought it was highly possible, especially since Louis said he hated to be crowded.
If Louis jumps on Frazier early and it is Foreman-Frazier all over again. After 4 rounds though.....Joe has a great chance.
He could but it would take a lot. Louis was one of the best punchers ever, and an awesome finisher. Frazier was hurt many times but survived... could he against Louis? I don't know, I don't think so.
One thing that sways me is the fact that Frazier was easy to hurt in the opening rounds. Oscar Bonavena floored Joe twice in the opening rounds, Ali staggered Joe in their rematch in the second round, and even Ron Stander hurt Joe early on. That's the part that really scares me. But would Joe Louis unleash the big guns early on? I think his patience might cost him.
I love Frazier but Joe Louis was wrong for him....Louis was controlled and had an arsenal of many different types of power combo's....If Frazier crowded him he may make some trouble and sparks but I put my money on Louis to prevail....Frazier said Louis was the best but not an easy fight for the great Joe Louis either
Interesting opinions here. I figured that with Joe Frazier would have success by crouching low, bobbing and weaving to slip Louis' shots and connecting with his own.
The thing is I just think Joe is going to be vulnerable with his come-forward style. It will work against most boxers, but against Joe Louis your heading down the wrong alley. I feel Frazier has a better chance against Lewis than Louis... some may think that's crazy but it's my sincere thoughts. I think if Joe can get head to chest he can perhaps win. Maybe it would get 1-2 for Frazier in a 3 fight series. But Louis figures himself... whether it be within the first match or the return.
funny you said that. That's another one I'd like to see. I think Lewis could stop Frazier early, but that's the only way he'd beat him. Otherwise Lewis is getting put to sleep by a left hook somewhere in the middle to late rounds. Against Joe Louis, I just don't see it, really. Joe Louis seemed flat footed; he was very stationary. He wasn't light on his feet at all. I think Frazier could corner him very easily. I know that Louis had fast hands and accurate punching ability, but would he be able to land clean shots on someone like Frazier who is constantly bobbing and weaving?
louis could be hit but the man was a phenomenon. There are 2 joe fraziers. pre ali frazier was an ATG then there is the guy who george foreman beat. I just think the peak joe louis was too hard to beat, he had a spell of genuine invincibilty. his timing was un-human.
I loved Joe Frazier...I saw Frazier beat Ali MSG in 1971...Frazier had a great but short prime...But against the Brown Bomber who ko'd Max Baer in 1935, Frazier would have been stopped by Louis...Frazier was not hard to hit and when Louis opened up in his prime , it was curtains for his opponents...Look what happened to a tough and bobbing Arturo Godoy..Not in Fraziers class as a puncher, but just as tough , strong and more difficult to hit...In the second fight with Godoy Louis opened up with short , deadly uppercuts, and tko'd Godoy...Frazier of course could punch so he had a chance to win, but Louis in his prime was a " coil spring unwinding "...Louis by ko over one of my favorite fighters. Great fight while it lasted...
Just want to throw in some things. Louis was not particular vulnerable to left hooks, more to rights. He was also was very good at countering his man. This combined with Frazier's vulnerability early on spells trouble for Joe.
I think Frazier was harder to hit than Godoy. He made Ali miss thousands of jabs, and Ali had one of the fastest and most accurate jabs ever. And I think Frazier would be more dangerous than Godoy because Frazier would be connecting with his own power shots everytime his opponent missed a punch; Godoy was just happy dodging punches and going the distance. Louis KO'd Godoy the second time around, but had trouble in the first fight. Frazier would get in really really close to Joe, not giving him any time to adjust or even set up his punches. His pressure was nonstop. I think if Marciano could KO Joe Louis, then so could Frazier. (Granted, Louis was old when he fought Rocky. But based on their styles, I think Rocky always had his number.) I respect your opinions, guys. Most people here feel that Smokin Joe doesn't have much of a chance. But then again, I can easily see Frazier repeatedly smashing Louis with left hooks to the body and head. I'd still like to see this fight. If Louis was to win this one, it wouldn't be easy.
I noticed that the right hand was always the kiss of death for Louis. However, Tony Galento and Marciano both decked Louis with left hooks. I think if Frazier landed a few good ones, he'd eventually knock him out.
I don't think the Marciano fight can be used to judge a prime Louis. Galento decked Louis but well, quite a few fighters did. He came back and whooped their asses. Frazier's hook was better than Galento's but wouldn't Louis know that? Frazier has a good chance, don't get me wrong, I just don't think he should be favoured.
Louis was also put through the ropes by Buddy Baer's left hook ,Baer had no difficulty landing this punch .He was slower than Frazier but with a longer reach, which may have contributed to him catching Louis. Louis could be tagged and dropped, keeping him there was another matter. I pick Louis by ko.
