The way I see it, Hatton/Pacquiao showed us one of two things about Hatton. Either: 1) Hatton was a shot fighter or 2) Hatton’s defense just wasn’t up to par at the elite level Which was it? Edit: If both, to what extent is it one option over the other?
Interestingly, Mayweather stated in an interview with Brian Kenny that the only reason Manny did a quicker job on Hatton (and De La Hoya as well) is because he had already beat both fighters mentally and physically.
I’d say “both” too, but I’m undecided as to which one it’s more of. Hatton looked decent against Mallinagi and the other guy he faced after Mayweather. But he wasn’t great against either. So it’s hard to say how shot he was.
I thought Hatton performed well against Mayweather in some senses and was rather hampered by the referee. He was never going to beat Mayweather but he definitely didn't look like a shot fighter on the night. In fact, he rather looked the opposite, high on his toes, moving quite well and ready to deliver offence. His defence was never truly elite though.
I watched that fight with a Hatton obsessive who scored every round for Ricky, that was a bit of a mad night actually.
LOL. Yeah that's a stretch. But check out this video I made Hatton's successes against Mayweather: This content is protected
A factor that gets overlooked is that Hatton had left his longtime trainer Billy Graham and hooked up with off all people Floyd Sr. which in hindsight was madness. Why on earth would a relentless pressure fighter like Ricky hire a trainer whose specialities were counter punching and slick boxing ?? Also came out in the 24/7 series that Floyd Sr. was turning up late for training sessions, too busy ordering hamburgers IIRC. So yeah Hatton had been ruined by Floyd as well as the wars with Tszyu and Collazo but his choice of trainer was also a factor. Still a very good win for Pac. This content is protected
I think his defense was always a bit porous. He might have been a tad diminished as well but to what extent I’m not entirely sure. In either event the result was probably more attributed to him being in the ring with a fighter who was well out of his league than anything else. Manny Pacquiao was borderline unbeatable in 2008 or whenever that fight was. A solid ATG in his prime.
If you listen to what Mayweather said to Hatton in the corner after round 1, he yells at him for a lack of head movement and for coming straight in and says "You should have been listening to me from day one!" LOL. Whether or not Mayweather was accurate, I wouldn't try to make my fighter feel regret in the middle of the fight.
Manny Paq at that time was at a level higher than even greats like Hatton. Remember Mayweather wanted nothing to do with Paq at this time for good reason.
Floyd is full of it. Mosley in the first fight and Hopkins had already beaten Oscar more emphatically than Mayweather managed to do. Did they mentally and physically soften up Oscar for Floyd as well? Did Manny ruin Cotto for Floyd too?
