I was recently reading on Jim and was going through some articles on him and was looking at his record and I came across something I found interesting and was wondering if anyone could help me.I brought up an article through google search first page called "Jim Jeffries, The Boilermaker" where it states Jim was never off his feet in a fight during his prime.I was looking around a little longer and came across another page that has an article written on Febuary 6, 1917 that states Jim was in fact knocked down by only one man during his prime who goes by the name of "Jack Munroe".On Jim's BOXREC they do not have any detail on this fight either,it simply says Jim won by KO in the 2ND, does anyone know anything about this??? here is the page link http://antekprizering.com/munroepostwar.html
The Bute Miner news paper which covered the event locally has has been pulled. It was a exhibition match that Jeffries domianted, and floored Munore several times, but had to give Munroe $500 for lasting the four rounds. Munroe lasting the 4 rounds was big news. However he did not floor Jeffries. False press got out that Munroe did floor Jeffries, which was enough to secure a real title fight between the two that lasted two rounds. The two round match was filmed, and no less authority than Jack Dempsey himself said he saw it in the 1960's at a collectors house.
I have read that Jeffries was off his feet ,but as a result of being off balance .Munroe's people made hay out of it ,and manoeuvered him into a title shot.Jeffries was apparently put down by , then Champ, Jim Corbett, when Jeffries served as his sparring partner, these things happen in training, and should not have too much importance attached to them As far as is known, Jeffries was NEVER floored in an actual fight, while in his prime , he had a seriously top chin. He was way past it when Johnson stopped him in his abortive comeback.
It almost certainly didnt happen. It seems that the story was concocted by Munroes manager, who was Bob Fitzsimmons brother in law, in order to get a title fight with Jeffries. Fitzsimmons was so outraged that he punched his brother in law to the floor. Munroes people got a lot of publicity from the aledged incident, then they set about matching their man with name fighters who had seen better days like Sharkey and Maher. The ruse worked and a head of steam built up for a Jeffries Munroe fight.
