How come in all the postfight interviews except the Barrera fight (at least from what i've seen so far) does Juan Manual Marquez speak spanish? I mean, he responds to Merchant's questions fine in english without the interpreter after his victory over Barrera. However, in all the his other postfight interviews I have seen of him has the interpreter translate for him and he reply's in spanish and then the interpreter translates what he answers in english. What's the point if he is fluent in english?:huh

You can understand another language, but be much more comfortable speaking in your native tongue.

    I think 2 reasons:

1-Mexican fans prefer their fighters talk in spanish

2-Sometimes it's easier to understand others talk than to talk yourself. That's how it is with me and Spanish (But that's also because I learned italian, and confuse the two too much).

Marquez is not fluent in english......but he speaks it good enough to get by......

If I'm not mistaken, after the Juan Diaz fight, Marquez did'nt need the interpreter to understand Kellerman's questions.....but he anwered the questions back in spanish because he can express himself alot better in spanish.

Most people who are not fluent in speaking a language, understand almost everything spoken to them, but its a whole other ballgame to use the language to express yourself with it.

Good question I was wondering that myself after the Diaz fight. His english is just about perfect but I think divac is spot on when he says that he can express his thoughts better in Spanish to the Mexican people.Tranquilo!!

Its not just expressing it to the Mexican people, its to everyone in general......naturally Marquez can add more to his answers in a language he can dominate.

    It's because he's 100% mexican.

God didn't you guys listen to him in that video package?

(In reality the guys above me nailed it. The comfort level for most spanish speaking fighters is in Spanish...so if they feel they have a point to get across, they'll switch it up. Morales did that a lot.)

Well OK,its not just Mexican people but people who can speak Spanish(hispanics) and like you say all people. But,its all well and good speaking in a language you can dominate, but you can't dominate any language when you talk through a translator

I can usually understand Spanish, but couldn't speak it without big difficulties.

Eric Morales understood English but didn't speak it. I saw JMM is the same way, he listens to merchant, doesn't need translation, then talks in spanish.

JMM can speak English fluently as already stated. There are a few clips of him doing so on Youtube but only he knows why he speaks in Spanish in post fight interviews
