I was talking to a co-worker today about Larry Holmes. He was telling me that all of Holmes' title defenses were against ranked opponents. I looked at his record and saw names like Ossie Ocasio, Scott Frank, Leroy Jones etc and was wondering if these guys were actually ranked or just tomato cans. The guy I was talking to at work is older and has more boxing knowledge than I do, so I just want to verify what he was saying.
Larry holmes is an atg. He throws jabs in his sleep. He throws jabs while he's ****in. He beat the best the world had to offer during his era. Twenty years from now no one will recognize the names of the guys wlad fought but he also runs through the best available comp. As far as each opponants ranking at the the time they fought Larry? Do know. Don't give a ****.
Ossie Ocasio was a ranked heavy at one time due to his 2 wins over the faded but still ranked Jimmy Young. then later dropped down to cruiser and won a title. Leroy Jones was definitely ranked i think even in the top 5 Scott Frank many thought this would be a mismatch and gave him no chance but to his credit he had a win over contender Renaldo Snipes. He defended against other guys like Lucien Rodriguez,Lorenzo Zanon and Evangalista who were european champs but just top 20 heavys not top 10. Although im sure one of the alphabet soup organizations had them in their top 10.
A lot of his opponents were ranked due to connections to promoter Don King, not on merit. Ossie Ocascio for example, and a few others had no business getting title shots or being ranked.
Some people think Larry was such a high ATG status but many of the chumps he fought would probably not qualify in today's HW market.
He went 12 with Tex Cobb. He lost to lightheavyweight Michael Spinks! Renaldo Snipes landed a right hand from left field and really hurt Holmes and Snipes was a very crude fighter.
Look at it this way. I was around when holmes was reigning. The talk in the boxing gyms and among fans was that he was a very good heavy (bordering great) that was in a very weak era. The guys he was fighting he was a major favorite over. some of them were top 20 and some were just challengers. Here is the inference, the guys Vitali has been fighting are on par with what Holmes was fighting at the time. Wlad is actually fighting better opposition right now than Holmes had available. So when people say this is the weakest division ever, trust that they "dont know **** about boxing".
Holmes was very unfortunate, his reign was too close to Ali's and Tyson's. Larry was a tough *******.
larry holmes was a great fighter but he defended his title against many tomato cans in a very weak heavyweight era. larry doesn't get criticism for this like the klitchsko's because he was an american fighter, fighting american tomato cans rather than a european fighting european tomato cans.
It doesn't matter if Holmes fought a few guys who were over matched. He also racked up wins over half-a-dozen very good fighters. Head to head there are damn few champs in history who would beat a prime Larry Holmes.
