I've heard different information from different sources. I've heard that Rocky took it easy on the old Joe Louis for the early rounds and finally knocked him out in the 8th. Lou Duva said that Rocky told him he was just playing around with Joe and didn't wanna hurt him. He felt that he could have knocked him out in the first round if he wanted.

On the other hand, the fight itself proves otherwise. The early rounds were pretty competitive. Rocky got stronger and faster the longer the fight went, but Joe didn't embarrass himself and won some rounds. There was a movie about Marciano where Rocky was played by Jon Favreau (Great movie, btw) and the movie depicted Rocky having a great deal of trouble against the aging Louis until round 7.

My question is...which is the most likely scenario? Do you think Rocky just mauled around with Louis with no real intent to harm him, or do you think a fading Joe Louis was really that good?

Ignore the stories and go with your read on the fight. I still can't watch that one, personally.

Louis didn't fight that badly in the early rounds. I believe he was just about even after six rounds but from then on he tired and Rocky came on strong.

I don't think Marciano ever took it easy on anybody.

I don't see how you could watch it and think Marciano was taking it easy and just all of a sudden decided to end it, the fight played out according the the script that many of Rocky's fights did. Starts out competitive, Rocky's stamina and power catches up, the other guy wears down and gets put out. Rocky didn't look any different in this fight than he did in others.

Rocky did not take it easy and after five it was an even fight. After that Rocky took over.

Rocky felt if the first round was another 30 seconds he might have taken Joe out then because he does catch Joe with a good right and rocks him in the final ten of that round. Joe takes it well but he did feel it.

In my opinion, although Rocky felt bad about battering his hero,I do n't think he took it particularly easy. He was an up and coming pro fighter, who was hungry. Joe still looked quite useful early on.

Marciano didnt take it easy on any one, not even his brother. The Louis bout was his showcase fight, a chance to break in to the really big time, and get a shot at the title .Marciano fought his hardest from the opening bell, to the end ,as the film confirms.

yeah, even though louis was a pale shadow of his former destuctive self he did make a mess of the rocks features with his left jab as he did to ezzard charles.

My hunch (suported to some extent by Marciano's testimony) is that Marciano's strategy was essentialy to tire Louis out and then finish him in the later rounds.

In other words he did not go for the finish in the early rounds but the fight essentialy went to his scipt.

No chance MArciano was there and to get his title shot, taking it easy would be foolish even against this version of Rocky. The early rounds were split, Louis started outboxing Marciano for a while, Louis tired, Marciano came on strong and beat him up late. WHy would anyone consider an 8th round brutal KO any less worse than a 1st round KO?

Marciano loved Joe Louis and he proved it later on when he and Frank Sinatra got him a classy high paying job in Las Vegas. Marciano also helped Joe with his business contacts. Joe Louis was also Frank Sinatras hero. Marciano looked up to Louis as a kid and tresured an autograph he got from him. Thing is when Marciano went into the ring he became a vicious predator, he took his time and let Joe get tired but oviously went in for the Kill, like his hero did with Max Baer, Braddck, Carnera, and other older champions. It was a brutal KO...Joe Louis style

I think the fight was pretty even the first 4 or so rounds.

The tided turn in around the 5th, and Rocky maul Louis.

I also think Rocky almost had Louis out of there in round 1, that right hand was powerful.

Louis show he still had his jab, and did mark Rocky's nose up with it.

I would not used this fight to judge a prime match up, Rocky Marciano was still green, his defenses would go up by the time he won the title, and Louis still had a lot of ex going in here.

Goldman or was it Al?? said they fear Louis might have known a little too much for the upcoming Marciano.

Had it been Rocky from the LarSarza fight or even the first Walcott fight vs the 1951 Louis, I think it would have been a one sided beatdown about imo.

Truth is, Louis was aged / faded, but in great shape for a dude age 37.... Louis came to fight, but he was fighting a younger, hungrier kid of a mere age 28........ Nobody went easy on anyone.......... They duked-it-out..... Louis finally wilted and was stopped in round 8......... All on the level, too...... Cheerio......
