Fellers, anyone know how much sparring fighters do when they prepare for a title fight? When do they start sparring and when do they finish sparring before the big fight? I read me this article about Zuniga and it says he stopped sparring Bute because he got the call to fight Inkin, with two weeks to go or so. Is that customary?
It depends, but why would ZUniga continue sparring a guy who's better than him and could tool him in sparring and doesn't necessarily resemble the opponent he's facing?
Bute is a boxer puncher. Inkin is a boxer (puncher). They're not identical in styles, but they're not a bad match. Bute is more proven than Inkin but might not be better, see? What would Zuniga do with two weeks left on the clock before the fight that doesn't involve some sparring? Why not sparr with Bute some more and only take one week off, to keep himself fresh but also sharp for the fight? You say "it depends". Well, what do most fighters preparing for a title fight do? Do they stop sparring completely with two weeks to go?
Varies, sure thing, but do most fighters preparing for a title fight stop sparring with two weeks to go or do they continue sparring until a couple of days/ a week before the fight?
I would assume they would stop hard sparring about then. You don't want to risk an injury that close to the fight.
You still move but you don't go all out. You go at maybe 50% of what you're fully capable of. That's what I do anyway, the last night of training I have before I fight I don't really go too hard, I'm not trying to injure something before fighting.
It depends on the fighters and trainers.. For instance, when Pacquiao was training for Diaz, he would spar with all four of his sparring partners.. For instance, when he would start sparring, it would be about six rounds a day.. As the fight came close and each week passed, he would boost up the rounds and box about 12 rounds a day with all sparring partners.. But in the final week, each day he would drop a round or two.. It all really depends on the fighters and trainers.. Since Pac is fighting DLH, he'll be sparring a lot more than for his last fight seeing as how DLH is way much bigger and he'll be sparring with jr. middleweights and middleweights.. That's just an example.. Don't know how many hours a day or week, but they do spar a certain amount of rounds with their sparring partners..
man, that all depends on your trainer....some fighters never stop sparring, ever...but they dont go that hard, they do it just to stay in shape...but coming closer to the fight, they up the competition and intensity..... i know a guy who spars all year round, but he's always in shape and whenever a fight pops up, he takes it.... i know another guy who spars only about 4 weeks prior to his fights, but he goes reallllllllllllllyyyy hard, almost like a god damn fight.... so it all depends... some also do it by rounds......like 120 rds during camp...
Yeah, I've heard a lot of pros do the last thing you said, go for a certain number of rounds over a certain period in camp. I like the first approach though, always working year round even if it's not always as hard as you can go.
one of my other boys who stays in shape and spars all year round can spar 15rds like nothing, and instead of breaks he does mit work in the corner......it's ****en amazing how he does that...he goes through like 5 different partners when he does that ****
