Styles make fights and Patterson had the style, or to be more precise, the speed to beat Moore. Durell was tough and could punch but he was no speed demon. This enabled Moore to recover in between the knockdowns and eventually wear Durell down physically and even more importantly psychologically. By simply weathering the storm Moore was able to test Durell's will to continue, especially when Archie began to deliver some hurt of his own later on. Against Patterson Moore couldn't employ that strategy because Floyd was simply too young, too good and too fast. He simply couldn't with Patterson's speed.
