he was voted in hof as having the toughest chin yet people and himself say he was very good at rolling with the punches and not really absorbing that much punishment. so then why the title as having the toughest chin and who would be second?
I saw an interview with an older Lamotta where he said the most telling thing about his chin - he stated that he used to "hypnotize" himself to take a punch. He would tell himself over and over that no punch could hurt him and that he could absorb any punch thrown at him. He said at the time he didn't realize he was hypnotizing himself but that as he got older he understood it was a form of self hypnotization.
Joe Grim got dropped numerous times. (20 against Bob Fitzsimmons) He also has KO losses on his record.
Does having a great chin mean that you never get dropped, or that you're unlikely to get stopped. I think my concept of a chin is evolving toward the later where defene, recuperative power, and staing power counts for as much as not getting dropped.
outside of the st valentines day massacre and the first murphy fight(lamotta was way to fat) and the nardico fight(jake was way past it) what beatings did he take from who, and how bad were they?
The most telling thing to me about LaMotta's chin is not the Robinson fights but his fight with Satterfield. Robinson never saw the day he could KO a legit HW. Satterfield could knock those guys dead. He landed some bombs on LaMotta according to the press reports and ended up getting stopped, draped over the rapes unceremoniously.
