If Carwin is to pace himself more then he does not look as devastating nor does he produce such a dominant first round. This coupled with the fact that Brock (unless a moron) will work more on his stand up, change his gameplan to avoid the strikes more and learn to fight/defend off his back more.

Agreed, Overeem is a true mixed martial artist as well as being a big mother****er. I was a boxing fan for years and due to the politics/lack of the big fights getting made i now prefer MMA to boxing. Perhaps that's why I like accomplished strikers.

Also as I'm from the UK I admit that I know little about wrestling, it has no part in our culture, and find it a really ugly and boring sport. I know the value of it in MMA is huge as some top wrestlers who could do very little else have held belts (Matt Hughes being the obvious one) They spoke about MMA evolving etc but I fear that the most 'evolved' guy, GSP, is turning into a lay and pray specialist as his big plus is his freakish strength at the weight and Serra shows what a lottery standing can be in those small gloves.

I disagree. It's easy with hindsight but Knock him down and let him stand up again. Don't go to the ground at all if he can help it. If SC had done this he'd have the belt right now. At the point in the fight where BL pushed SC away with his feet SC should have backed up and let him up because you can get **** loads more leverage in your shots when standing and a guy who is disoriented is more suseptable to getting hit and also the ref could have seen just how hurt he was. He would have been staggering around.

Let him stand up. Carwin is an accomplished wrestler who had Lesnar is an incredibly vulnerable position and was pounding him out. He did land big shots but didn't put him out.

If he was to let the fight stand up every time it went down then Carwin is suspect to a big shot (Gonzaga) and to being taken down himself.

You are just thinking of eventualities to help Carwin to victory but fights aren't like that. Fighters have a game plan to execute and there will ALWAYS be some freestyle involved.

Like i say: hindsight makes things easy. But I do watch many fights where I see a guy knock the other down and then he drops on him and bangs away with no leverage and risks getting caught in an arm bar etc. i say if you KD a guy and he is REALY hurt. let him stand up, if he can't the fight is over. The only really effective striking you see on the deck is after a standing bomb has landed and the guy is out anyway and it gives the ref no choice but to stop it.

Thats not true. A million fights are stopped from a guy dropping BOMBS on a downed opponent. Carwin still had decent leverage. Letting a guy get up gives him time to recover. Hindsight does make things easy.

But if the guy in question is far inferior on his feet?

Like I said - freestyle. Carwin had to make a split second judgement call. If Brock lands a big right, I still think Carwin could be put on ***** street. The risk works both ways.

Hmmm. Yeah, you're right but implementing a gameplan is a big part of all combat sports so perhaps the split second judgment argument could be obsolete. Also if a guy is hurt and his balance is affected his strikes would be down in power.

I always think that if I was a BJJ guy and I was fighting a striker and he lands, if you went down he will always drop on top and try to finish. But is that really ant different to pulling guard?

If I was a KO king (Carwin) and was fighting a wrestler (Lesnar) even though SC is a wrestler too I'm sure I saw some stat where Brock won like 105 matches and lost 2 or something like that. I would avoid any ground based combat like the plague. BL looked as lost on his feet in round 1 as James toney will on his back V Randy.

Wounded tiger - no matter how hurt, if Carwin keeps it standing he is open to a shot just like Gonzaga was for him. The position Brock was in poised no worry to Carwin as his BJJ sucks and he had no striking power off his back.

I think Lesnar loses to the next guy who he stands with for more then the first 30 seconds of a round. Lesnar has atrocious stand-up and by the looks of things is not as confident in his own chin as he should be. Not a good combo for a stand-up fight.

OK. I respect what you are saying and you could well be right. Now, I know we'll never know, but try and imagine what would happen if SC had asked a confused BL, who had just covered up and backed accross the cage, to stand up.

I know I am talking with hindsight but how do you think BL would have reacted mentally and physcally to being asked to stand up when shaky on his feet and out of his comfort zone?

I don't think Brock was THAT HURT but mentally I would be intrigued to see if he was confused at Carwins request. However I think he would look to shoot immediately like he did at the start of the second round and like he pinned Carwin as soon as he stood up.

I disagree. I truly belive that BL is so ineperienced his between round pep talk is what won the fight for him. He was not experienced enough to know or think about how gassed SC was. He needed that confirmation, reinforcement from his corner. I kind of think that if you are laying on your back getting punched it's easy to know what to do: Survive. I think he was looking a little lost in the first round and standing with daylight betweeen you and a guy who just hurt you is a severe and exposing place to be. I think the 6 fight novice may have crumbled.

BUT, I may be wrong. I thought he would crumble anyway and Lesnar, even though he lookes amaturish at times, is obviously ****ing hard.

The main factor has to be Lesnar's illness. He had been very sick, lost a lot of weight, missed a lot of training time and came into the cage that night with a year's worth of ring rust. If ever you wanted to beat Brock Lesnar, UFC 116 was the time to do it. But Brock won.

Carwin was able to impose his gameplan, and still lost. He stopped the early takedown, hurt Lesnar standing and then attacked with ground and pound. It's hard to imagine how it could have gone much better for him, but as we all saw he gassed badly (in the first round of a five round fight) and had nothing left in the second. Cardio doesn't usually improve with age, and Carwin is already 35.

While Lesnar may have looked absurd getting smashed standing, running away and flailing off his back, he gutted it out and managed to survive. In the second round Carwin was defeated without much resistance. In a rematch there is additional pressure on the fighter who lost the first time and I imagine that the manner of the loss will increase that pressure. Some fighters find the first loss particularly hard to deal with, though I think Carwin will suck it up like a professional and be able to maintain his form.

Training is another issue. Lesnar will be training his stand-up like a maniac after the first fight, he and his coaches know it's a weakness and needs to improve. Now you may think that Carwin will be training just as hard to improve his game and the two will cancel each other out, but I think that Brock has several advantages in this respect.

As I have mentioned, Carwin is an older man than Lesnar and there are at least two challengers ahead of him in the division. He will be at least 36 by the time he gets another shot and possibly older. In addition, he still works part-time as a hydraulic engineer, while Lesnar has $100,000 training camps with some of the best coaches in the game. Not to mention Brock is sparring with professional mixed martial arts fighters in the Carwin mould: big, powerful wrestlers like Chris Tuchsherer (18-3, 1 NC), Cole Konrad (4-0), Kirk Klosowsky (1-0) and Lance Anderson (3-0). Brock has more time and resources than Carwin, so his rate of improvement will be faster.

So, for these reasons I think Carwin will not get a better chance to beat Lesnar than the one he had at UFC 116. I'm not saying that Carwin couldn't win a rematch because he certainly could, but in the first fight he had the deck stacked in his favour and he still lost. Without these advantages, I think he'll find the rematch tougher and my money would be on another Brock Lesnar victory.
