The Scene: Me - Southpaw - roughly 185lbs (84kg) and about 5'11" Opponent - Orthodox - roughly 195lb (90kg) and about 5'9" 'Light' sparring The Problem: From the off, the guy keeps his left hand out - nearly straight arm - and uses to push slightly while leaning forward. With not a massive amount of experience, I'm having difficulty getting around it to do anything. I try to get my right foot on the outside and he turns to face. Try to go inside out of frustration and go straight into a right straight. Even tried going over/under, but (somehow) don't seem to have the reach despite a 2" height advantage. The only way I get anywhere is to ape the same technique and parry anything he throws... but then I always seem to be just a bit too far back to do anything......... - Any advice? -
It's actually a foul to hold the lead arm out straight like that, if that was me I'd just wait & fein, wait for him to close the gap & come over with a right hook, left hand, move out & just wait, might be boring but it might work
At what point will you get pulled by the ref for the extended glove? Against smaller guys it works very well for me and with my footwork it allows me to control range quite well, but if it's constantly semi-extended will I get pulled?
The whole point of being a southpaw is understanding how to counter. More so, I think, than is generally true, because it is all backwards. Get around it, or turn him.
It is a Myth that you need to be on the outside! What you need to do is work your way to the outside as you punch so you can drop your left hand down the middle and either throw the hook or turn away.
Thanks a lot for all the input! I think a big part is a lack of general fitness aswell as the mindset that "I MUST be on the outside as that's what lefties do" Next time I get a chance, I'll try out some of the tips (especially what I will dub the 'Elbow Crusher' >
As a rangy orthodox boxer, I extened my left hand as much as possible against both southpaws and orthodox opponents. Basically keep doing it until I'm warned
First of all, in a real fight they would tell him not to hold his jab like that, it is a foul. However what you can do to really make him stop doing it, move outside, as if you went for his body, his left but let your own straight left go inside hard towards his head, that way you are moving outside but your left is on the "inside" his jab. Then come up with a rigfht hook and I promise you that he will never box like that again. Works everytime
He keeps his left hand out ??? Perfect. Parry -- deflect/slap his left hand, with your right, across to your left/his right. This body will also turn to his right and for a moment, he will have no hands to block or punch with. Instantly you step in with a hard short straight southpaw left to the side of his exposed defenceless face.
I don't give 2 ****s about if they're foot is outside of mine, as long as I know where their hands are...if I shut down his jab hand then no **** they're going to throw the right hand
