What are some of your all time favorite fights? The reason I ask is because any time a thread comes up criticising a fighter like Mayweather or Cory Spinks etc, the thread is filled with people that say that is how boxing is supposed to be. Boxing is about hitting and not getting hit. However, any time a thread is started for all time favorite fights, it is filled with replies like Hagler vs Hearn, Barrera vs Morales and other fights with lots of very heated exchanges. So for those of you that prefer the more suave styles of slicksters, what are your favorite fights.
Seriously if someone can't post at least 5 fights in this thread that they legitamitly enjoyed, I don't want to hear **** about "go watch UFC or toughman fights" next time someone says that they prefer action fights.
I know this is gay but i really enjoyed Hopkins/Taylor 1. It was the definition of hitting and not being hit. Boring for most but Hopkins completely dominated from that aspect.
Mayweather's demolition of Corrales is fascinating. Liston-Ali I is a masterclass if on the level Roy Jones doesn't ship a lot whilst picking the wings off Hopkins Charley Burley versus Oakland Billy Smith is a cracking fight and available on YouTube Billy Conn does a wonderful job of evading Joe Louis for 12 rounds in one of the greatest fights ever fought There's five for you to be going on with sir.
Go watch some Sweet Pea. That is the definition of hitting and not getting hit and unlike most who are masters of defense he kept it exciting.
Hagler-Duran! Great example. Ray Leonard-Roberto Duran II Sugar Ray Robinson-Jake LaMotta VI. Chirst, that is maybe the best fight ever though. May not qualify as Robinson ships a bucketload of punishment. But then he is in with the most aggressive pressure fighter in history. I think it should be included. Robinson fights a wonderful evasive fight. Emile Griffith-Dick Tiger. That's a mad fight, but it's primarily a defencive performance. Naseem Hamed-Steve Robinson. Man, there are loads!
This was not a defensive fight at all. it was one guy throwing so many punches that something was bound to land and the other guy working through them. there was no slickness invloved in that fight at all.
PBF hatton- all the defensive slickness on display by mayweather and he outfought the fighter on the inside and beat him at his own game.
Well to use some of the names you mentioned... Judah - Mayweather, interesting in terms of boxing because in the first few rounds Zab was beating Floyd to the punch, and even though he only landed a few clean punches, winning rounds. Floyd couldn't beat Zab using his typical style, so he changed styles, and began to come forward with his guard up and pressure Zab, breaking him down and winning the fight. Hamed - Barrera, in this fight Barrera uses textbook boxing, and combination punching to chop down the unorthodox puncher. Tarver - Jones III - though some people see this fight as just Jones being washed up and afraid to fight offensively, and Tarver barely doing enough to win the fight.. theres really a lot more to it. Tarver would have given Jones problems at any time in his career. Jones is so effective on the offensive because of his unorthodox styles. He uses misdirection, knows how to attack when his opponent is not expecting it, and of course his speed to take guys out. Tarver had been studying Jones for his entire career (Even in the amateurs). Jones is never able to get off in this fight, because Tarver feints, throws a jab, or gives Jones some movement every time Jones gets set to do one of these unorthodox maneuvers. Its really quite brilliant I think. Its definitely not an action fight, anyone who has boxed would appreciate it because it was very much a fight with the outcome determined by who had the better mental game. But after reading some more of the thread I see this is not what you're looking for, you what specifically DEFENSIVE fights. Well here are some things: Every James Toney fight. James Toney is ridiculously slick, and spends most of all of his fights rolling his shoulder and counter punching. Or watch almost any Pernell Whitaker fight. But are you sure you know what it is you're asking for? You mention Floyd as being strictly a defensive fighter... but its his offense that wins fights. He does counter punch, and use his defense to give him offensive opportunities, sure. But most of the punches he lands are things like lead rights.. which he lands by throwing outside of his opponents rhythm. His offense is just as brilliant as his defense, he just doesn't seem to get credit for it because people don't understand how his offense works. He doesn't just land punches because of his great hand speed. Watch Gatti - Mayweather, and watch Judah - Maweather. In the first fight, Mayweather uses his speed and power to get the job done... in the second fight he is only able to catch Zab with those lead rights and left hooks by throwing when Zab isn't expecting anything to come.
