Form follows function and that applies to boxing as well. Equipment wasn't as well made way back when. Gloves were smaller and stuffed with horsehair that seperated from the knuckles in a long fight so fighters had to be careful about letting the punches fly and the damage to thier faces if they landed...hence the lean back/hands low technique with targeted pot shotting. Mouthguards were either non existent or poorly made. Everything now is mass produced in factories and made of the highest quality. Bigger and better made gloves...Form fitting mouthpieces and superior hand wraps mean a fighter can now rely on faster combination punching and better protection from incoming blows by holding his hands up higher and ducking or slipping the shots instead of blocking them with extended arms or leaning way back to avoid them. This encourages closer combat. 12 round fights also mean less time to get the job done so the pace is faster...generally speaking. Give a modern boxer equipment from a hundred years ago amd his technique would almost certainly change. Hell, give any modern athelete in any sport equipment from 100 years ago and his technique would change. It's just a natural progression.
