First televised fight I can remember watching was the Muhammad Ali v Leon Spinks rematch in 1978.

Also followed John Conteh's career through the press and recall being disappointed when he lost his World Lt-Heavy title. Conteh was a household name in Britain but the tv coverage was nowhere near like the sort of saturation levels we have today. It was often a question of just catching a few highlights several days later!

Another early memory is the tragic plight of Johnny Owen. I remember checking the "stop press" column of the evening paper when I got in from school each day for the latest update on his condition. Just when it seemed he was getting better, he was sadly taken from us. I was stunned.

Yep, I remember that. Most daily news programs had an update on Johnnys condition at some point. It happened the same month as the Minter-Hagler 'scenes' but doesn't seem to be as well remembered.

Holmes/Jones was the first fight I remember; Hagler/Minter was the first fight I went to, aged 6.

Them were the days. Free boxing on ITV etc, with BBC having the Bruno and Honeygan fights.

I think it was Barry McGuigan v Valerio Nati for the Euro title, I was about 8 years old and watched it with my late grandad who loved the boxing. I've followed it ever since but obviously more serious as I got older. Watching the rise of Mike Tyson was an absolute thrill and some of his early fights just never get old.

First real vivid fight memory was Benn v G Man. I was 10 and what happened stays in the head.
