Since Amir Khan has been crying more and more about this floyd Mayweather I've found myself asking what makes you worthy of a fight of that magnitude and how do you become a PPV star. I personally don't even think Khan deserves it personally but at the same time I can't say that Ortiz, Maidana, or Guerro did much more than Khan at the same time, they didn't whine about the fight as much as khan is which almost makes them more deserving in my mind but i'm getting off topic. I started thinking about all the PPV stars I've seen in my lifetime. Tyson ODLH Floyd Pacqiuao What do those guys all seem to have had in common? 1 - Were able to completely clean out their very 1st weight class. 2 - Was able to move up from their initial weight class and take out 1-2 of the most dangerous opponents in the following division 3 - Was able to secure a fight with the top or second best PPV attraction at the time and win in that fight 4 - have support & push from your promotional stable and network Correct me if you think there should be more added to this list or if there is something i'm not including but i feel like this is pretty much the recipe. This would definitely explain why some fighters have fallen short or why some guys are in the middle of this process. Fighters need to show some discipline and focus on clearing out their division instead of chasing fights with pacquiao & mayweather if they want to really become stars instead of just chasing a quick buck.
You can have elite level skills and not be anywhere close to being a PPV superstar. Erislandy Lara, Rigondeaux,...etc.... Mike Tyson was a young exciting american prospect knocking everybody out and beating some highly ranked fighters very early into his career. Oscar DLH beat a top ppv mexican attraction Julio Ceasar Chavez which made him a big name. He also had it all from a marketing standpoint. A good looking talented guy who had top level boxing skills. That's what people love. Mayweather was brought along nicely beating names like Corrales, Arturo Gatti, Corley, Judah, Baldomir,....etc... and everytime getting more popularity. He had it all when it comes to marketability. Pacquiao has a lot of positives coming up beating legends from the lower weights and then destroying opponents in exciting fashion as he stepped up picking up loads of belts in the process. His talent and victories alone made him the PPV star. You need these attributes to be at the top to be marketable to the casual fan market and to hardcore fans.
What Jeffries is forgetting is that before fighting Oscar De La Hoya, Mayweather and Pacquiao were only doing 200-300k pay per views. Afterward, they routinely did over a million. It helps to have a bump by defeating another big star. Oscar got big by beating Julio Cesar Chavez. Also, I think what a lot of guys like Rigondeaux with great skills are lacking is the desire to be great. Guys like Ward, Danny Garcia, and Mikey Garcia aren't taking the risks and attempting the impossible. They'd rather sit at home and whine about money.
see I disagree about havin a1 skills. Roy jones JR is probably more talented than every one of the people i put on the list possibly but I don't recall of him having a huge success as a PPV attraction. Which is why I left being highly skilled off the list.
