Are hand wraps mandatory or is there minimum requirement? Reason for asking is, I think it is generally true that a bare/minimally wrapped fist will cause more damage to your opponent. Of course hand wraps are there to protect your fist also, but some may not have any problems with just using the padding on the gloves.

No one would want to use less. The wraps are to tightly compact the hand and wrist. The more wrap you have, the harder you can punch. If you didn't have support, you wouldn't throw as hard..

Go and try punching a heavy bag without wraps as hard as you can.. Let me know how that goes for you.

    Wraps are necessary.

Hitting a bag especially a heavy bag without wraps is a bad idea.

Wrist sprains are a pain in the ass

Nobody in their right mind would risk training without them.. especially if you box...

They are mandatory, and there is a minimum requirement.

it is but then again some can do it, However try to fight with out some wraps even spar, even through the bigger gloves once you hit someone on their head, or on their elbow you will have a better understanding why the wraps are needed

The only time you should try it out is if its a contest to see who breaks their hand first

Great post. I do remember in the 24/7 for Mosley/Mayweather, Sugar Shane said he liked a thinner wrap and to push his knuckles as deep into the gloves as possible.

I always use wraps (108" Everlast white) under my bag gloves (16 ounce Everlast Pro Style) to protect my hands. I can't imagine a guy not doing that.

Wraps protect the hands. Gloves protect the opponent. Cheats have exploited both. Example Margo with the illegal wraps and years ago Luis Resto having padding removed from his gloves.

Rule one mate, if you're going to Box; make sure the guy teaching you is capable of showing you how to protect your hands.

Otherwise you end up like me. Reduced to trying to explain things to muppets on an Internet forum.

Good trainers show you how to wrap your hands correctly very early days. If your trainer doesn't. Find a better one.

I was never shown that, by the time I put my foot down it was too late, and my hobby was now something I couldn't do.

Any time I've shown anyone Boxing, as a friend or a coach; I've shown them how to wrap their hands. The tools of the trade are your fists, look after them and you can then start to think about looking after yourself.
